Given that he's so ego driven, and he has millions of adoring fans, wouldn't it stand to reason that he'd try to take all those fans, start his own party, and keep them going to his rallies and slavishly praising him? If he was the head of his own party, he wouldn't have to answer to any opposition or anything.
I have a feeling that this is something that keeps some of the higher ups in the RNC awake at night. He could potentially ruin the republican party for at least an election cycle or two. I personally highly recommend that he does this.

(415 posts)Sure they wouldn't win any national elections, but it would pull enough votes from republicans to really shift the balance of power.

(6,355 posts)As long as the base can rustle up a minion of 10 followers to fawn on Trump - he will be a force on the right.
Throughout his life, he has done nothing but take what others have built, slap his name on it, and proceed to drive it into the ground.
The RNC will be no different and the ruin will last more than a few election cycles. I can only hope they go the way of the Whigs.

(17,912 posts)The problem is, it's tough to do rallies from jail or a foreign country lacking an extradition treaty with the US. The rubes don't travel internationally much, unless you consider Myrtle Beach a foreign country. Donnie recently had an unannounced meeting with the Indonesian Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investment. Odd, since it's extremely rare for US presidents to meet with foreign functionaries below the ambassador level. But....you guessed it...The US has no extradition treaties with Indonesia. One of the better countries lacking such. Other than Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Russia, the rest are extremely poor, failed states or both.

(17,912 posts)That's a good point. Initially, that might be a problem, but over time, whatever he knows becomes stale. Then again, he doesn't get daily briefings and probably pays little attention to what he does get. Really, he may not know anything Putin doesn't already know. So no real security risk compared to a normal president. He's of no real hostage value either. If some foreign actor threatens to kill him, half the country would thank them.

(2,271 posts)That would be great. In fact, I think one of the reasons Trump has the GOP by the proverbial short hairs, is the mortal threat that he poses for the GOP is he starts his own Party.

The Trump Republicans are like the NSDAP in Germany in 1938. In 1938 the NSDAP owned the place, and no one dared publicly oppose them. Their leader was officially known only as "the leader." Ten years later, they were spurned, detested, disgraced, and forbidden. No one even wanted to admit they had ever been a member.

(69 posts)We've needed a "third" party for a long time and this may very well be the start of a 4-party system for some time.
Think about it - if Trump takes his cult members with him, we're talking ~1/2 the nation which would create a viable split. There would be neocons and nationalists (Reagonian Republicans vs Hitler), and it appears the Democratic party may split evenly as well - we will have neoliberals and progressives (or Clintonian Democrats and FDR Dems).
If he does that, then it MAY help Democrats in the short-term, because I'm certain there are a lot of "Republicans" that won't want to follow Trump into the pits of hell. But, I have a feeling that post-Biden will result in a clear split within the current party of neoliberal Clintonian Democrats vs Rooseveltian Democrats.
But eventually, they would likely coalesce back into something else to keep pushing this two-party nonsense we've had for so long.

(182,791 posts)There is a lot of infrastructure and foundation. From bosses (who still exist) to teams of volunteers who may or may not come on orders from a boss to registering candidates and campaign finding down to the very local level to fundraising that candidates can piggy back on to a lot of other aspects...its more than just being on TV.

(9,722 posts)Four years of him on the republican stage keeping other potential candidates at bay. He would hog the entire party making it completely his. Observe the state its in now, the party is fragile he would collapse it in those four years.

(6,039 posts)There are some MAGAs they are perfectly willing to go over the edge and beyond because of their ideology. Once the losses mount up to a relatively unified Democratic party it will be the end of the trumpublican party. It may not look like it now but they are just not in a position of strength.

(19,060 posts)Trump owns the Republican Party. There is virtually no dissent from him in that party. They will 100% follow him no matter what. Zero chance he starts another party when he already owns one.

The MAGATs need someone to worship.
And the fallout would benefit all of the humans in this country by causing Republicans to lose elections.
I think the TRUMP or MAGA party should field candidates in every race from dog catcher to president.
