Just like you clip the claws on dogs. So the cats’s claws are left blunted so they can’t scratch the furniture.

I had to leave my cat at a cat hotel for a few days and it was required by the owners. My cat didn’t seem to mind and only started scratching the furniture when his claws got sharp again. I think scratching furniture is because it keep their claws healthy and in shape.

Buy a huge cat tree, scratching posts, and some cardboard for the floor, and there shouldn't be much of a problem.

Cats have a bad rep, but they can be totally awesome, and learn commands and stuff. I had a cat who waited by the door I went out until I returned. He learned to play hide and seek with me, showing reasoning and creativity. He rolled over on command, came when he was called, and seemed to know many things I said.

He knew when my son was sad, and tried to cheer him up. This cat liked to be in the center of family activities, and led a life much like a little dog, but of course with the peculiar slant of a cat.

He was never allowed outside. He was learning how to open doors even at an old age. He remains my cat standard of excellence.

I'd rather see The First Cat's portrait on the wall than Trump's.

I don't mind them having a cat wrangler do it. I want them both to do their thing in fixing the country back! Good cup of coffee in the morning with breakfast, and...get to work!

FLOTUS will have a typical project she'll work on, and I am hoping it'll be in keeping with her degree--another reason to have voted for Biden.

Let's put Doug to work, too. What's he do now?

Just accustom your cat to getting his feet touched and his cute little toes gently squeezed to pop out his claws. Use a big toenail clipper and just snip off the sharp ends on the front claws. Takes a about 30 seconds and the cats get cuddled and fed lots of treats so they are happy to get their claws clipped.

It's also a lot cheaper and less stressful than a trip to the vet or a groomer.

I have tendonitis which, if you’ve ever experienced it, makes your muscles weak because your tendons don’t have the strength to move them normally. My cat is pretty large and it’s easy for him to get away from me if he really wants to. It’s the reason I haven’t tried clipping his claws. But I’ll give it a try. You never know. It might work.

I started taking care of them when my wonderful elderly neighbor became ill, then passed away. She had them all TNR'd and given shots, cost her a fortune, just before her health declined. Her fantastic son came by every day to feed them and freshen their water. I'm a dog person - two girls - but I've watched those cats run the street for a few years so I offered to take over. They are now "mine" (HAH!) and I love 'em dearly, but clipping their claws scares the heck outta me. Rip, shred, blood. Three of them only let me pet them when I put their food trays down, and that's it. Besides, they live on my porch (in 2-story insulated cat houses) but they need their claws for protection.

If I could clip their claws, I'd play with them more, since they love to swipe!

Cats need to scratch, if they don't have a post to scratch, whose fault is it if the furniture gets ruined? Not the cats.

I've lived with cats for years and none of my furniture is scratched.

I had a lot of scratching posts, at least one in every room (even the bathroom). I placed them strategically - if the cats started to claw the couch, I'd put a scratching post in the exact spot against the couch. After a while they just started scratching on the posts and I would move them to a better location and the cat would follow.

Also, I sprinkled catnip and a few treats on the base of the posts.

And, this is important, I have very tall scratching posts. To many posts are actually to short for the cat to get a good stretch with their scratching.

There have been many cats in the White House before: Lincoln had two of them; Hayes had three; McKinley had two; T. Roosevelt had two (and many other sorts of animals); Wilson had one; Coolidge had two plus a bobcat; JFK had one; Ford had one; Carter had one; Clinton had one; and W had one. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_pets

Yet somehow the furniture survived.

Cats are needed in the White House.

I do hope they are getting a shelter cat.

Shelter cats and dogs are the best, in my opinion.

Well, if a cat or a dog shows up in your front yard and adopts you, that's even better.

In most cases, the cat will perch on your lap on a frequent basis. You'll pet that cat, either intentionally or absent-mindedly. That will lower your blood pressure, so cats are healthy to have around.

Dogs and cats get along just fine in houses where both are resident. I suggest that they get a kitten. Dogs like kittens. People like kittens. Kittens like every warm-blooded animal larger than themselves.
