I was going to spend my next vacation in Florida but not now.
I will either head to Arizona or Georgia and spend my money there.

(31,374 posts)I have always lived in a blue county since moving in 2000 to the purple state of NC. If you're going to move--and not for family or a job--consider coming to a blue area of a purple state and help turn it blue.
MoonchildCA
(1,301 posts)I think its a great idea to move to purple states and tip the scale.
Thats not the primary reason we are doing it, but its a nice benefit.

(23,065 posts)Right now we aren't going anywhere, red or blue. That's not what's driving my decisions, it's safety. Right now FL is much more safe than the surrounding states and a ton more safe than the interior. Regardless, we are not traveling anywhere for any reason until we are vaccinated. Then we will return to going to smaller, family owned places as we did previously.
Some places I won't drive through, MS. LA and TX but that was put in place after traveling all over the nation 20 years ago and those states gave us issues with the rednecks (trumpers these days). KS, SD and ID were just bland and boring and wouldn't drive thru there either. We always flew when we went to the NO Jazz Fest for that reason or when going to family reunions in TX. Of course nothing is safe at this time so we stay home.

(31,261 posts)One advantage that Virginia has is being close to the nations Capitol, so a lot of technology companies set up shop in Virginia and that expanded to include more technology. North Carolina has the research triangle, and banking and financial services around Charlotte. I believe that as the technology core of North Carolina expands, the state will trend blue and stay that way.
The big problem with my state of Florida is that it is relatively technology industry poor, it is mostly tourism and the medical industry that is highly dependent upon retirees that flock to the state. The universities here have done a poor job of spinning off research into forward looking startups. The state also doesnt have a significant venture capital presence, a factor that I believe creates the dearth of technology startups that keep young people in the state to offset the retired people arrivals.

(34,095 posts)Boy, think of the loss. Will we ever get over this?
I can probably guess where you live but will not do it here because I do actually have friends from some of those states.
How about this, there are a lot of good Democrats everywhere and keep this shit up and many will never visit your state either. Not because of your politics but because you assume that the state we live in is not as good as yours so you should cause ALL of us to live in a lesser way than you. What the ever loving fuck good is it to paint all people in a state the same way rather than helping those on your side keep slowly turning things around?
Hmmm, that does not sound like any true and good Democrats I know.
Just a thought.

Broward County (Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood), Fla., is very blue, as is Austin, TX. And in the sea of red called Louisiana, there's this wonderful blue bastion called New Orleans.

States that elected as governor and senator, republicans Nixon, Reagan and Bush II and then sicked them on us nationally as presidents in DC where I am.
Forty plus years of these clowns' administrations led us to the point of decline and collapse that we're facing now.

The principle that an entire state votes the way of its majority is unfair as a means of selecting a president, and it's unfair as a means of determining who to boycott. You're punishing people for the crime of living in states where they're politically outnumbered.

(16,330 posts)Years ago, SOME people on DU said this about Georgia (a few times and for different reasons).
It meant nothing except to make the person feel better.
Tourism in Georgia went up. Business (such as film-making) went UP.
What DID help in Georgia was GOTV. And organizations such as Fair Fight. And money from all over.
This election was promoted in ways I haven't seen before. The local news told people where to find ballot drop off locations. There were fliers telling you how to check your registration online. We received numerous mail-in ballot applications in the mail. Members of my family received handwritten postcards from people in OTHER states, an act I had participated in myself for prior elections. Early voting locations were talked about on Nextdoor and Twitter AND the local news. People were told how to make sure their vote had been received in the mail. It wasn't just crap ads and feel good rallies.
This is the kind of action needed in every state. It is short-sighted to think otherwise.

(1,803 posts)you know which flag. Isn't it interesting how GA was putting out the welcome mat for Hollywood and Silicon Valley!?!?
To the freeper/magat lurkers: Boycott GA Runoff MAGAts! It's all a conspiracy to get you to drink Starbucks everyday!
I agree with the GOTV. Stacey Abrams is awesome. But I guarantee GOTV won't flip Utah to Democrats. And my money will NEVER go there willingly.

(41,936 posts)as long as its aimed at them. I grew up on the MS coast, among a WHOLE lot of red necks. And black folks, and Vietnamese, and Creoles and Cajuns and Christians and witchy women (same crowd) and activists and the mafia and carpetbaggers and snow birds and Jews and to broad brush any region is just as prejudiced as those people calling us elites and baby killers and godless and all the things they need to say so they can hate us en masse.
It betrays us and makes us puppets. I like DU for all kinds of things but this aspect is a bad one.

(14,914 posts)money there to show gratitude for the role of their Democratic primary in pulling Joe Biden back from the brink and restoring his status as a viable candidate when many were writing him off. Yeah, a "red state." I will mindfully spend some of that vacation money at Black-owned businesses and restaurants there. I shudder to think what might have happened if our brothers and sisters in that "red state" had not stepped up (strongly urged by Jim Clyburn).
Xolodno
(6,384 posts)The voting isn't all encompassing. Even in California there are red pockets that happen to be in tourist areas, but that's the exception and not the rule. Most red counties across the country have nothing to offer for the tourist to visit, its the blue areas that often do.
