(78,255 posts)She is a repuke. Remember when we thought we could trust Muller?
She would also present a potential conflict of interest.

(18,348 posts)Because she was fired by Trump. The AG has to be independent and above any sort of perceived bias. My personal favorite is Doug Jones.

Sally Yates has a spine and that's been tested.

(44,507 posts)Second, removing her because of appearances is rewarding Trump's outrageous vindictive behavior.
Every person punished by Trump for doing their job must be restored and indemnified.

(7,147 posts)I want someone who will prosecute all of these Repuke CRIMINALS with EXTREME PREJUDICE.
Anything less and soon in the future some other INTELLIGENT Fascist will complete the destruction of our democracy.

(2,017 posts)conservative in its administration will hurt this Democratic victory. Repukes cannot be swayed by reason or thoughtful and fair treatment. When your enemy is trying to kill you don't put down your knife.
We need a much more aggressive AG. Repukes need to LOSE the understanding that cheating is OK. That voter suppression is OK. That white supremacy is OK. That violating civil rights is OK. They need to fear a Democratic administration not know that anything they do will be forgiven and they can continue to be assholes for the sake of power.
Very disappointing list.

He's the perfect choice IMO, in that he has both the legal and political chops to be the AG, and is widely respected across party lines.

(17,440 posts)Doug Jones clearly has guts, even though he softpedals his voice. But we need forceful and also sprawling executive experience due to the scope of work.
Sally Yates might be great shes brave and clear about the criminality of what she witnessed but again, maybe not forceful enough / dominant with strength of will. The whining from the right about her bias would be a plus but a GOP Senate would never confirm.
Harvard-educated, 64-year old Deval Patrick might be better than I thought at first. He worked at DOJ under Clinton, civil rights division, including overseeing arson investigations at black churches. His corporate knowledge as managing director at Bain is distasteful to those of us sick of corporate power in politics, but it might provide helpful soft power behind the scenes with Romney and corporate elites. Without clear democratic ownership of the senate, that may become important in confirmation and who knows what else. As governor, he obviously had experience overseeing complex bureaucracies with wide-ranging responsibilities. His polished manner makes it tempting to underestimate him.

(58,785 posts)established by our founders and developed since by many decades of applied legal principles. Although that 6-3 hard-right SCOTUS majority was created to change that, it's not happened yet.
Not to blame Biden for that, though, or anything that's happened since 2016. HE didn't go around telling voters it wouldn't make any real difference who was elected if it was the Republican or Democratic candidate since there was little difference in the parties. And not to mistake the conservative laws of red states for the federal laws and principles our AG will be applying.
Those who fell for the blizzard of lies from both sides are the weaklings who brought us all down and are the ones to worry about.
Not people of conviction. Whoever our new AG will be is taking on a huge task, one not exactly for the faint hearted and wobbly minded.
AkFemDem
(2,508 posts)Well vetted and respected candidates.
The word you are looking for isnt moderate or conservative (those political descriptors dont belong in a discussion about an attorney general- who should first and foremost be ABOVE politics!) The word is reasoned or honorable.

(22,458 posts)We cant have a weak AG like Holder-justice wont be done and the country wont survive.
We must have an aggressive AG.

(8,345 posts)Personally, I would like to see someone who's going to reform the DoJ...from the Bureau of Prisons to Customs and Border Protection along with Executive elimination of the Department of Homeland Security. The carceral state really kind of sucks, y'all.
NewJeffCT
(56,848 posts)he's already picked two white people for 2 of the 4 key cabinet roles - State with Blinken & Yellen for Treasury. Michelle Flournay is supposedly a favorite for Defense, and she's white as well.

NewJeffCT
(56,848 posts)then he's being considered. I'm just saying that if Biden names all white people to his top 4 positions (State, Treasury, AG and Defense), then it will look bad.
DeminPennswoods
(17,335 posts)although he'd be great heading up DoJ's Civil Rights Division if he's not picked for AG.

(167,153 posts)and Jones used to be a U.S. Attorney (for Northern Alabama I believe) so he definitely has DOJ experience and can add some balance in the Administration (in terms of geographic representation).

(167 posts)I'm very interested in who gets appointed to Inspector General positions in the various departments. They're the ones who will be rooting out the wrongdoing.

(1,663 posts)He is a brave man. Took on the white supremacist murderers who burned down the church with children inside.
He is a decent, moral person, and very smart. We don't need someone outwardly frothing at the mouth. We do need an honest, courageous person who will apply the law and uphold the Constitution.
He has demonstrated these qualities his whole life - quietly. When he was in the Senate he didn't whine about Democratic Party positions or policies saying he had to support the policies of the Fundie RWNJs in Alabama, he voted for the
Democratic legislation with no complaints.
He's won and lost a Senate seat standing bravely for what is right. He's prosecuted people in his state who had majority cultural support but were murderers. He has the metal to be just what we need for AG.
