Kaaven, world's (formerly) most lonely elephant, arrives in Cambodia!

He'll be joining hundreds of fellow elephants on a gigantic sanctuary in northern Cambodia!

Like other travelers during these times, the elephant needed to be tested for Covid-19 before his flight. Once his large metal crate was safely on board, Kaavan was provided with in-flight snacks — 440 pounds of them — for the seven-hour journey.

Kaavan was not stressed during the flight, eating his food and even getting a little bit of sleep standing in his crate, said Amir Khalil, a veterinarian who accompanied him on the flight and works with Four Paws, the Vienna-headquartered animal rescue group that organized the move.

They acclimated him to the transport cage for 3 months. Also his vet helped him lose 1,000 pounds!

They were feeding him sugar cane at the zoo.

I'm glad he's relatively young for a rescue elephant. Hopefully he'll have many happy years ahead!

They have 5 rescued Asian females, their next rescue coming up is in my opinion the most compelling. It's a mother and daughter, the mother has lived at the zoo since 1968, the daughter who is 22 was born there. They live their lives below ground in a small recessed stone enclosure, it's a pathetic space for elephants, no grass, no trees, they can just barely stick their trunks over the enclosure. https://www.facebook.com/globalsanctuaryforelephants

No matter how bleak their lives have been, at least they had each other. Now, the whole wide world will open up for those two darlings!

Suki. She is elderly and has TB. no one can touch her, and she can't be around other elephants.

It's heartbreaking.
