No, White Women Didn't Vote for Trump

https://politicalwire.com/2020/12/01/no-white-women-didnt-vote-for-trump/

I've read this bs several times recently, so am happy for this clarification.

No, White Women Didn’t Vote for Trump
December 1, 2020 at 11:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard

Jonathan Chait: “White women voted for Trump. Or so you have probably heard. In the immediate aftermath of Donald Trump’s 2016 victory, the finding from early exit polls that 53 percent of white women voted for Trump formed the basis for a million social-media posts, op-eds, and rally placards. That this “fact” is not true is not even close to the biggest problem with its ubiquitous place in progressive social-justice discourse.”

“The 53 percent figure turned out to be erroneous, and corrected analyses eventually pegged Trump’s share of the white female electorate closer to 47 percent. Nonetheless, the impulse that propelled so many writers to blame white women for electing Trump proved strong enough to survive even after the factual basis was undercut. Indeed, left-wing opinion writers continued churning out polemics based on the erroneous 53 percent figure for years.”

I'm not saying the MINORITY of white women who voted for Dump shouldn't be yelled at, they absolutely should, but the 62% of white men is a much bigger number. A MAJORITY of white men.

I understand the white men here on this site did not vote for him. I do want the white men here to understand that white men who vote for Trump do not listen to what anyone who is not a straight white man has to say. If they did, they wouldn't vote for him. I want to know what straight white Democratic men are doing to change their peers' minds. You are literally the only people they're willing to listen to.

We know how many white women voted for Trump. Pew puts it at over 50%. Pew is pretty solid, and, personally, I'll believe them ove exit polling. So it's not about placing blame on white women because they are white women, but because, you know, they fucking voted for him more than they did for Biden. But even if exit polling is correct, it's STILL 47%.

I will also say that I find any vote for Trump disturbing. Whether it's from a white woman OR white man, or from any other conceivable racial/religious/gender identifier. Because he's an awful person and a racist, and I believe a vote for him means you're comfortable with racism and lies.

It's an EXCELLENT article - please read.

One point I wish he had included is in response to the admonition that white women need to convince their "sisters" not to vote for Trump. White women are 41% of the electorate, per Pew Research. This is the biggest demographic group in the electorate -- tens of millions of people, who live in every state. How exactly is a Democratic white woman living in an east coast metro area supposed to have even a passing social acquaintance with a Republican white woman living in rural Nebraska, let alone be in a position to influence her successfully? And, no one suggests that white men need to convince other white men to vote for Dems, even though this group is nearly as big as that of white women but far more likely to be Trump/GOP voters, so there is much more potentially to gain--why not?

There's reason to believe that this year's exit polls are more accurate than 2016's because they include widespread telephone polling due to the pandemic. And it's not like they didn't learn anything from the mistakes they made in the 2016 polling.

Trump got 46% of the overall vote and outperformed with white women by 1%, winning the white woman vote 47% to 45%. The exit polling said 53% of white women.

This year trump looks like he'll get 47% of the vote. The exit polling says 55% of white women.

Below's a relatively more neutral fact that needn't be so determinedly knee-jerked into oblivion. Those inclined may enjoy claiming it "proves" everything has always been all the fault of white women. (! )

For others, it'll probably just be a reminder that significant numbers of white women have always been an important, indispensable force behind every civil rights advance America has made in the last century. NONE of it could have happened without belief and commitment among white women to equality.

White women are 41% of the electorate, per Pew Research. This is the biggest demographic group in the electorate...

as comments here demanding that white women--directed at Democrats--should examine themselves reveal. Obviously Republican voters are happy with their decisions and won't examine why they vote GOP. So that hostility is directed against women here, and because we vote Democrat it's clear it has nothing to do with our voting behavior.

I recall that in 2016 this argument was used by some men to argue that the Democratic party should abandon abortion rights, despite the fact a majority of Americans support them. What it showed is that white men are desperate to get white women back under their thumbs. That is NEVER going to happen.

While it gags me that anybody in their right mind could ever vote for Trump, the fact remains that if you are going to beat one gender about the head and shoulders, it should not be on the basis that “over half of white women voted for Trump.”

I’ve mentioned once or twice — or maybe a dozen by now— that I have had it up to my teeth with that canard. Left-wing opinion writers, as Chait refers to them, should be asking why significantly fewer women than men voted for Trump; or put another way, why significantly more men than women did so.

even be good for the country. Probably the worst single article ever written on Trump. If credibility were expressed as a temperature, Chait's wouldn't melt an ice cube.

Hard pass on whatever smug, sanctimonious pontificating (his go-to style) he has to say on this or any other subject.

Why Liberals Should Support a Trump Republican Nomination

By Jonathan Chait

https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2016/02/why-liberals-should-support-a-trump-nomination.html

There are three reasons, in descending order of obviousness, for a liberal to earnestly and patriotically support a Trump Republican nomination. The first, of course, is that he would almost certainly lose. Trump’s ability to stay atop the polls for months, even as critics predicted his demise, has given him an aura of voodoo magic that frightens some Democrats. But whatever wizardry Trump has used to defy the laws of political gravity has worked only within his party. Among the electorate as a whole, he is massively — indeed, historically — unpopular, with unfavorable ratings now hovering around 60 percent and a public persona almost perfectly designed to repel the Obama coalition: racial minorities, single women, and college-educated whites. It would take a landscape-altering event like a recession for him to win; even that might not be enough.

Second, a Trump nomination might upend his party. The GOP is a machine that harnesses ethno-nationalistic fear — of communists, criminals, matrimonial gays, terrorists, snooty cultural elites — to win elections and then, once in office, caters to its wealthy donor base. (This is why even a social firebrand like Ted Cruz would privately assure the billionaire investor Paul Singer that he wasn’t particularly concerned about gay-marriage laws.) As its voting base has lost college-educated voters and gained blue-collar whites, the fissure between the means by which Republicans attain power and the ends they pursue once they have it has widened.

Trump’s candidacy represents, among other things, a revolt by the Republican proletariat against its master class. That is why National Review devoted a cover editorial and 22 columns to denouncing Trump as a heretic to the conservative movement. A Trump nomination might not actually cleave the GOP in two, but it could wreak havoc. If, like me, you think the Republican Party in its current incarnation needs to be burned to the ground and rebuilt anew, Trump is the only one holding a match.

The third reason to prefer a Trump nomination: If he does win, a Trump presidency would probably wind up doing less harm to the country than a Marco Rubio or a Cruz presidency. It might even, possibly, do some good.

snip

The worst takes of the 2010s

https://theoutline.com/post/8406/worst-takes-of-the-2010s-bret-stephens-david-brooks-megan-mcardle?zd=1&zi=hlwc7nn4

Chait’s immensely confident take on why the Democrats should support a Trump nomination is a humiliating crystallization of the wrongheaded thinking that propelled him to the White House: he asserts that Trump would easily lose (wrong), that he might force the Republicans to rebuild their party (wrong), that his presidency would do less harm than a conventional Republican (wrong) and might even do some good (WRONG!!!), that Trump’s presidency might end up like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s California governorship (wrong, and based on nothing besides “they were both celebrities”).

If I was this wrong, at this level of publication, I would probably re-examine all my fundamental assumptions about how people think. Three years later, Chait is still smugly wagging his finger about how things can’t be better, reminding us that nobody who makes this much money to fuck up that badly with zero self-awareness or reflection should be taken seriously about anything.
