'Bye-Bye, Betsy DeVos. You Won't Be Missed,' Says Sanders as Billionaire Education Secretary Attacks Push for Tuition-Free College

"What do you call a billionaire who registered a $40 million, 164-foot yacht in the Cayman Islands to avoid $2.4 million in U.S. taxes, while undermining public schools? The worst education secretary in the history of America," tweeted the Vermont senator, a leading proponent of student debt cancellation and tuition-free higher education. "Bye-bye, Betsy DeVos. You won't be missed."

In a speech at an Education Department financial aid conference on Tuesday, the outgoing education secretary dismissed as "government gift-giving" proposals to forgive crippling student loan debt and eliminate tuition for public colleges and universities.

In response to DeVos' remarks Tuesday, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.)—one of many lawmakers and activists pressuring Biden to use his authority to cancel student loan debt—tweeted sardonically, "Because we were all just dying to know what the unqualified billionaire who made this problem worse thinks about helping people."

8. Wonder what happens to all that money we owe?

Let's see! If all of a sudden, a "student (regardless of age) didn't have to spend hundreds per month on their student loan (interest fee + collections + forever paying) that money would go to really stupid things like, oh, maybe, rent, mortgages, HEALTH CARE, a somewhat better standard of living, etc. And that money goes to usually small businesses in the debtor's area keeping them in business!

Son of a gun! Just like what the Republicans have always said - money goes to help create jobs!

Just like pumping 3 trillion into the economy over night!

And instead of the gov and a few private greedy corporations getting that money that they will use to just buy back stock or give to investors who won't return nearly as much to the population, small businesses and doctors and even more educational facilities (through local) school taxes and many others would benefit from it.

Isn't that the same or better than a "Stimulus" where most of the money goes to businesses that don't need it?

Win Win!

You're making too much sense.

That's has to be a penalty somewhere!

16. Yeah! But my penalty wasn't 15 yards -

it was an extra $15k for something that was my college's fault. Went back to school in '96 graduated in 2000 (had retired in '95) but my mother had Alzheimer's, no insurance and hadn't paid her school taxes for 4 years. When they found out, the interest and penalty was high and I had to pay it under Pa law at the time and had to choose saving her house or paying a few months on my loan. They were NOT forgiving! So, technically I defaulted on my student loan by 1 month. That added a $2000 "collection fee plus interest on the collection fee! which had accrued dating back to my application for it. The college said I was responsible. Numerous filings and a court hearing and was told I should have known and was responsible. Had I not paid the back tax my mother would have lost her house. I ended up getting her house after she died and was threatened with PHEAA (the student loan Pa. company) recovering their money by foreclosing on the house. Fortunately, they didn't file in time and couldn't do anything. But the extra penalty resulted in an additional $15000 owed to them and I had to refinance my loan at over 10 percent interest instead of the 4.25!

Would have been nice to have that removed, but since I live in America, gotta take care of the corporations.

Gotta love big business!

But yeah, that money would have gone to businesses in my area and lowered what I pay for health insurance and all THAT BS.

Hope eliminating that burden for students at least helps a lot of them. Too late for me and a load of others.

9. Senator Warren, I hope you weren't expecting a Republican to help people.

Haven’t you realized by now that Republicans DON’T want to help ANYBODY?

Republicans DON’T want to help you.

Their attitude will ALWAYS be “you’re on your own.” And “boot yourself up by your own bootstraps.” That second one neglects to acknowledge that far too many Americans don’t even have boots to “bootstrap themselves up”.

They’re the Cruelty Party. They don’t give a damn about you unless you’re a wealthy donor (or they think you are) which means their mission is to talk you out of your money so it winds up in their pockets. If you’re not, if you need help, they assume you’re nothing but a lazy moocher and you don’t deserve any help.

The Party of Cruelty. As my mom would have said: “heart like a BB”.

Nine days ago -- WEEKS after election day -- FM123 posted a video of a classic song here. Please visit that post, watch the full clip, and then give it a like and/or comment. It's well worth another look now.

What I'd like to suggest here is that the person(s) who produced this clip for the Sore Loser, produce similar videos for each and every one of #DiaperDon's cabinet members as well, in which their own ineptitude, failures, and outright frauds committed against US taxpayers are similarly highlighted, as we all bid a not-so-fond fareweill to DeVos and her ilk.

It will not be unlike flushing away the "massive dumps" which they have taken on the nation's core values.

Yeah, I know: the tune is from 1969 -- presumable before many DUers were even born, let alone danced to this song. But all of us -- across multi-generations -- can adopt this as our post-election anthem, leading up to January 20, 2021.
