Meanwhile, the U.S. government is preparing to distribute vaccinations to the American public in order to put an end to the public health crisis.
Now, one proposal aims to help both efforts by giving people $1,500 stimulus checks in exchange for getting immunized.
The idea comes from entrepreneur John Delaney, a former Democratic congressman for Maryland who also ran for president in 2020.

Since a poll found that only 58% will want to get the vaccine this is a great idea!

Fuck Yeah!!

(17,821 posts)It's a shame, but maybe it will take that to get people to get vaccinated, aka, receive the Mark of the Beast.

(28,706 posts)Id pay a reasonable amount to get the vaccine... why would someone need to pay me?
ProfessorGAC
(76,693 posts)So, the $1,500 has strings.
It's not getting paid to get vaccinated.
It's setting a price for refusing to do so.
LisaL
(47,423 posts)So sure I am willing to get it for 1,500.

(12,061 posts)I think tying vaccination to payment sends the wrong message. Makes the vaccine seem like a negative.

Blue_true
(31,261 posts)But if a $1500 check gets the hesitant people to take the shot, then great. We need to get the number of vaccinated people well over 58%, or the vaccine won't stop the debacle that we are in.
Pobeka
(5,006 posts)To offer payment, implies there is a health risk to take the vaccine -- so you have to compensate for that health risk with $$. The *last* thing we need is another avenue that conspiracy theorists can go down.
Describe the vaccine, its known risks, its known benefits, and work hard to instill confidence in the general public to build trust in the vaccine.
This is going to be hard enough to administer to a few hundred million folks -- another conspiracy theory and having to track who is gaming the system trying to get multiple checks makes it even more difficult.
ProfessorGAC
(76,693 posts)This is NOT a plan to pay people for getting vaccinated.
It's setting a cost for not getting one.
Everybody gets $1,500. But if you don't get vaccinated you don't get it.
It's not an incentive to get the shot.
It's a penalty for refusing.
Pobeka
(5,006 posts)It's $$ for taking the shot. Why do we need the government to pay people? Sounds like the government is not convinced the vaccine is that safe if they have to pay you to take it, otherwise people would just flock to the vaccine centers in the first place. (I'm *not* promoting that idea, but worried it can be viewed that way).
From the article:
We have to create, in my judgment, an incentive for people to really accelerate their thinking about taking the vaccine, Delaney said.
That is clearly not a penalty for refusing to take it by the original sponser of the idea, it is a payment plan.
ProfessorGAC
(76,693 posts)He was on with either Keillar or Baldwin.
He used the word "disincentivize". As in, creating a disincentive to refuse the vaccination.
So, your quote and what I heard on are both sides of the same coin, I suppose.
He used " incentive " above, & the antonym on CNN.
I think the disincentive perspective can be easily marketed.
fescuerescue
(4,475 posts)it's pretty simple. $1500 if you get vaccinated. $0 if you don't.
I understand you want to put a nuance on it. But that nuance wont once last 5 minutes in the noise.
ProfessorGAC
(76,693 posts)I think it would be very easy to market "no vaccine, no stimulus check".
There is zero nuance in that message. No shot? No cash.
OneGrassRoot
(23,953 posts)to the anti-vaxx, the virus is a hoax, pro-Trump (tens of millions of people) crowd, they will NOT see it that way, and they're the ones who need to be convinced to take it. They will absolutely, positively, no doubt about it see it as proof of the conspiracy theory about the virus and the vaccine. I have zero doubt about this. And they'll use it to convince those near them who are ambivalent that there is something malevolent going on if they're paying you to take the vaccine. Because that's how it will be perceived and regurgitated.
ProfessorGAC
(76,693 posts)...I think you underestimate the motivation that is money.
fescuerescue
(4,475 posts)I doubt the message will get clearer in the wild.

(19,491 posts)And thats just them.
onecaliberal
(36,594 posts)Why is there only 3 million doses?
ProfessorGAC
(76,693 posts)There's 3 million doses of the best result version. But, they weren't making just that variant over these months.
Given my background working with big manufacturing, I also believe their production forecast is based on capacity right now. I have little doubt they continue to negotiate for contract manufacturers to expand their capacity, but until a contract is signed, they don't include that in their forecast.

(7,602 posts)them to. There is absolutely no reason to spend $475 billion dollars to get people to protect themselves and others. (assuming we give away $1500 per person). If we pay anyone, we'll have to pay everyone.

Not a question of money.
El Supremo
(20,436 posts)And replace "you" with "others". Most of us don't want a bribe. But this idea was for the antivaxers who don't care about infecting other people. Would this be enough of a bribe for them to get the vaccine?
Amaryllis
(11,285 posts)Simple not true. There are many reasons why someone may not want one.

Nah, just kidding. I'd take it tomorrow, for free. But if they want to give me $1500 too, I won't turn it down.

(21,799 posts)but I can see some people taking the money. They're probably the same people who NEED to be vaccinated but will only do it for the money. But only after the second shot.

(38,634 posts)If I determine it is appropriate, I'll get one without regard to whehter it is tied to a stimulus check.
So far it is looking good for meeting my criteria: >50% effective, and peer reviewed studies determine it is safe. It seems that at least 2 vaccines meet the first criteria. When it gets closer to decision time, I'll see what's out there in terms of peer reviewed studies. I'm not seeing any barriers on that front - but more information will be available before I have to make my decision.

(151,259 posts)I don't need a bribe to do that. I will take the stimulus, though, without any complaints. But my vaccination doesn't depend on that in any way. I want to survive this pandemic, so I can see what Biden can accomplish.
