Not only will Donald Trump be the only president to have lost the popular vote twice, Joe Biden got a greater percentage of the vote against an incumbent president than anyone since 1932.

(70,611 posts)I don't think the polls were that far off prior to the election and now that the
election is over those same polls at the same levels.

In addition to talking about machines flipping a certain percent of votes, the R's are all on about duplicated ballots and dead voters and out of state voters. Usual rule with them is what they accuse of is what they have done.

(5,008 posts)They thought everyone would mail the ballots so they destroyed sorting machines. They wanted a huge mess. Then they wanted to limit how long after the election that ballots could be accepted. However, once many of us found out what Trump/Dejoy were doing we dropped the ballots off in person and at drop boxes. Plus so many stood in long lines despite the pandemic. And that is why Trump is mad. The voter suppression did not work enough to flip the election in his favor.

(8,200 posts)One aspect of this that continues to amaze me is why any minority would vote for a party that has used every means they can think of to suppress their right to vote.

(5,174 posts)that the referred to population of that state would have taken him at his word and left right then. I would have loved to watch all the privileged trying to do what most of us do every day, and then watching them try to come up with reasons to get them to return. That would have been funny as all get out.

(2,475 posts)As well as reading that but for a few counties in a few states, it would all have been for naught. In my opinion we barely scraped out a win since the popular vote counts for so little.

(23,320 posts)1980, our dear Jimmy Carter lost by a big popular-vote margin. Even if he had gotten all of Anderson's votes, he still would have lost..
Also, no third-party candidate of note in 1840 when Harrison defeated Van Buren.

(61,715 posts)It's the Electoral College that makes our system so undemocratic, by giving disproportionate power to voters in less populated states.
Why should a voter in Montana have 20 times the voting power of somebody in California? It should be one voter = one vote.

(52,169 posts)Trump isn't the first president to lose the popular vote twice, he is the third. In 1824 and 1828 John Quincy Adams ran for President winning the election in the House in 1824 (he lost to Jackson in the popular vote) and losing both the EV and popular vote to Andrew Jackson in 1828. In 1888 Benjamin Harrison ran against Grover Cleveland (incumbent seeking reelection) and won the EV despite losing the popular vote. In 1892 Grover Cleveland ran against him and won both the popular vote and the EV.

(5,502 posts)That's what makes the challenges almost comical. What makes them scary is the same thing...so called serious challenges to a victory that is unquestionable.
I still want to understand Florida. How were the polls so wrong there?
