Seriously, I had never heard the term "Chicago Deep Dish" until I lived in New York. I had been to Chicago many times, and I had eaten pizza there many times. But they never called it Chicago Deep Dish pizza. They just called it pizza.

I'm pretty sure it was named by New Yorkers, as a way of differentiating it from the thinner, foldable style that Obama describes. You can get either style in New York. Not sure, but I'm guessing you can get either style of pizza in Chicago too.

I'd like to add that we're blessed to have so many wonderful Italian restaurants all over the USA, and the most awesome pizza. I've eaten pizza in different areas of Europe - terrible! Thank you, Italian-Americans for teaching us how to make great pizza.

was in Naples, Italy. Just flat bread and plain tomato sauce. Period.

thin crust is widely available.
only the foolish call it 'new york style', tho.
unless you come from nyc, you will look stupid.

loved the za in nyc. esp at that joint at the foot of the brooklyn bridge.

for a convention. One evening, we decided to go for pizza. So, we walked to Uno Pizzaria, which was not far from our hotel. There was a line up the block to get into the place. "Oh, well," my wife said, so we went up and looked at the menu outside the entry, on the other side from the line. We were sure not going to wait in that line.

Just then, someone came out of the restaurant and said to the people in line, "We have a table in the smoking area. Anyone?" Nobody said anything, so I said to the person, "That sounds fine to us." So, he picked up the rope and led us into the place.

All of which goes to show you that if you didn't care about nearby smokers, you got to eat. If not, you got to stand in line. At least back then, before smoking was prohibited just about everywhere. So, we got our authentic Chicago Pizza that evening. It was hella good pizza, too.

There at exactly the right time, with smoke-averse folks at the head of the line.
