The Republican Party is evolving into the junta ruling Nazi America in "The Man in the High Castle"

The same imposition of supposedly "wholesome" family values extolled by "leaders" who must be obeyed, for the good of the nation, that was the hallmark of "The Great Nazi Reich". That political State covered the eastern and central portions of the USA in the Amazon TV series based on the novel by Philip K. Dick. The TV series fascinated me, in no small part due to my life long love of Philip K. Dick's SciFi writing. All of the predictable excesses of Fascist rule were of course terrifying to witness portrayed in a TV drama, But what was most chilling for me was the banality of authoritarian rule, the quiet adjustments that civil society makes to accommodate it on a day to day basis: all of the rationalizations and seamless coordinated efforts to normalize a tyranny that insinuates itself into the very psyche of a people.

"The Man in The High Castle" captured all of that masterfully, and in so doing made it far too plausible for comfort, that fascism of that sort could take hold in America. I at first viewed it as a teaching prophecy for what could befall America within a decade, if we became insufficiently vigilant. Now I realize that I had it wrong. Watching our political system being assaulted by wave after wave of The Big Lie" crashing against it, I know I was off by at least half. The nightmare could become real within five years if we do not adequately resist it now. Elected Republican leaders all across our nation are rallying to subvert and overturn the electoral process that literally installed them into office in the first place. They have fallen all over themselves to fall into line behind whatever perverted narrative the "Dear Leader" wants them to peddle on their behalf. They join him in railing against supposed forces of moral decay "on the Left" that purportedly will destroy everything that good Americans hold sacred if they are not defeated now.

For those who are familiar with the Amazon series, while it might take a man like Donald Trump to breech the defenses of our democracy, I fear the emergence of a future John Smith, who can place the velvet glove over the fist that would ultimately smash it.

We've been looking for a series.

Been watching The Rise of the Nazis on PBS. Also many parallels.

On one level it could be indulged in as a rather far fetched alternative universe drama, with intriguing plot lines that sometimes veered off somewhat toward the nonsensical, but what haunted me deeply was the portrayal of life inside a fascist America, when the "good people" all embraced it.

but to comment on the big picture, I think that when Republicans and “others” figure out how to mix the fascist state into the economy and make money, it will be hard to break it. There is so much terror and pain and suffering clawing at decency worldwide that I think people look to a strongman figure to wrap his or her arms around them to keep them safe. Of course, the strongman would have to be given leeway to perhaps operate out of the constraints of a constitution or past the lines of morality.

Turkey's AKP or Fidesz.

“The Republican Party in the U.S. has retreated from upholding democratic norms in recent years,” said Anna Lührmann, a political scientist at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden and a former member of the German parliament. “Its rhetoric is closer to authoritarian parties, such as AKP in Turkey and Fidesz in Hungary.”

Lührmann is deputy director of the university’s V-Dem Institute, which compiled the data. For the project, researchers recruited more than 600 political scientists around the world to make annual assessments of political parties’ adherence to a number of key small-D democratic values.

The Democratic Party, by contrast, hasn’t changed much. This is a prime example of what political scientists call asymmetric polarization — a growing partisan gap driven almost entirely by the actions of the Republican Party.

When Gingrich was Speaker and produced his Contract for America , far right parties in Europe like the national Front swooned and introduced contracts of their own. A lot of it started with Gingrich. It's hard to govern when the other party is only interested in obstructing everything.

After watching the rise of groups like The Oath Keepers, The III %ers, the Proud Boys, Identity Europa ,and TP USA, I wonder no more. Even though Biden has won, we're still in for some very dark times ahead.

from Professor Larry Diamond at Stanford during Obama's 2nd term. He's worked with Madeline Albright and advised Presidents. There were a lot of questions from students , even back then, if our democracy would last due to GOP obstruction and lack of interest in governing. Diamond said we were ok now but if another Great Depression hits all bets are off. Even if Trump didn't exist the GOP is a danger to democracy and it will probably be the vehicle through which another authoritarian rises.

There was an article in Buzzfeed a couple years ago that kids were using Trump's name and rhetoric as a way of bullying other students. I keep thinking - these are middle and high school students. Imagine what these kids are going to be like when they are old enough to run for office.

As long as the reigning American self myth was about overcoming racism and building an inclusive future where everyone can live happily ever after while celebrating our democratic freedoms as enshrined in our Constitution, those with a contrary vision felt a need to keep their heads down. No longer. I am stunned by how many what once would have been considered reputable figures have begun calling for the suspension of the Constitution and the imposition of Martial Law in the wake of November's election. Trump, using his elevated position in the White House, ripped the lid off Pandora's Box.

What happens when those types displace the current Republican legislators and Secretary's of State who refuse to go along with nullifying elections and don't hesitate about choosing their own electors to the Electoral College?
