A man from Zimbabwe has been helping out at our church as an associate while he is here with his famility on some sort of educational fellowship (I'm not sure of those details). A month ago, after Zoom church, he presented a slide show about the struggles his home village has gone through to keep itself supplied with water. Several water sources had dried up over the years, some intermittently, some permanently. When he was a child (he has teen children now), he and his school mates would spend many hours fetching water twice a day from a source several miles from their home. They've continued to do that.
Over the last few years efforts have been made to drill a well near the village. Three attempts ended in failure. Then, this fall, they struck water just a few feet from his mother's home. They needed to raise $5000 very quickly to take the next step to construct a well. Within two weeks we had raised $7000 and so they can now proceed and, in addition, build an irrigation system for the community garden.
It's not often you get so much bang for the buck so quickly!!! What joy!

P.S. Got an update that as of today we've raised $12,000.

(15,506 posts)I want to sincerely express my gratitude and thanks to the UniLu family. I cannot tell you how much this has meant to my community, my family and me. We were not sure what we were going to do because of our situation, but your help and assistance came just in time for our community to transform their lives and we thank you all very much.
With these funds (Over $13,000!) our community has been able to finally install a solar-powered water well and we are now working to put in a drip-irrigation community garden. The money has enabled not only clean and reliable water but the more effective gardening will help the community raise some small cash to pay school fees, and buy books and uniforms for the children. You have made a real difference in the lives of the fifty families this well is going to serve.
Now the community members time is put to better use. More time is being spent at home, work, and school instead of walking more than eight miles daily to collect water.
If you have specific questions about how your gift is being used, or you want further information, please dont hesitate to contact us.
Thank you, sincerely,
Gracious Moyo
