Black Mom Swarmed & Beaten by Philly Riot Police with Toddler in Car Demands Officers Be FiredA Black mother who was attacked by a horde of Philadelphia police officers is speaking out about the harrowing experience. Rickia Young was driving an SUV with her 2-year-old son and teenage nephew on October 27 as the city was engulfed in protest over the police killing of Walter Wallace Jr. earlier that day. Officers descended on the vehicle, broke its windows, assaulted and arrested her and separated her from her child. Youngs arrest went viral due to a shocking video of the police swarming her vehicle, and after the National Fraternal Order of Police the countrys largest police union posted a photo of her 2-year-old on social media, falsely claiming he was lost during the violent riots in Philadelphia, wandering around barefoot in an area that was experiencing complete lawlessness. More than a month after the police attack, Rickia Young is demanding the officers involved be fired. The police have not offered an explanation as to why they acted the way they did that night. They responded instead with a police investigation into Rickia, says Kevin Mincey, Rickia Youngs attorney.

(90,189 posts)May I also say that of all the unions in the US, the police unions need to be decertified and broken up. The current system is not working out.
There are other unions for City and County workers, and they can join those. In them they will find the usual protections for civil service employees, but they will never ever be untouchable by the law. They will not be allowed to act as gangs of thugs.

(90,189 posts)We pay their salaries to protect us from bad guys (as they so often like to point out), not be judge, jury, and public executioner on the basis of some whim.
Defund is the wrong word. We need to be able to vote for people who will go after their budgets line by line including the parts where millions of tax dollars go to settlements while nothing changes. We need to take away all the military toys that BushCheney gifted to them after 9-11. All that shit they have such easy access to belongs in the National Guard Armory under lock and key.
All their unions with their special off-premises training and their special gang-tattoos and special initiations need to be decertified. Theres a nice legal process for that. And then go after the gang members with the seriousness the situation deserves. Im looking at you, Los Angeles.
AFSCME would be just fine. Regular hiring and firing would be just fine. Normal resume checks that mean something would be just fine. A person that screws up so badly at a County job that they get fired has to drag that around on their resume forever not get rehired right away in another locale or another state with a wink and a toothy grin.

i can defend defund. but ppl are tooo stupid to get it.
take away their military crap. have you seen the packs they carry these days? w the vests and the redundant weapons, they must weigh 40 lbs. every time i see them, i think of how dog fighters make their dogs wear weighted vests.
and here in chi, all summer, they were chicken to get out of their squads.
and they dont wear f'ing masks, either. i was a witness to a car crash a month or so ago. i had a vid of the passengers getting out of the car, taking off.
the cop that came didnt have a mask. i asked him to put one on. no. till a guy asked him, then, of course...
because i walked away after i showed him the vid, he said i was refusing too cooperate.

(25,816 posts)It's the first instinct for someone abused, like the victim in the OP, to want to sue because
of the injustice. But the city, i.e. the citizens, pay that bill. If the police unions had to pay,
they would demand much more professional actions from the police men and women.

(90,189 posts)...seeing themselves as so damn special they get to have their own gang tattoos, among other things. Cities and counties need to fire their asses after paying out millions for wrongdoing.
My point with these annoying questions is that reforms have been tried for decades. Reforms are what got us George Floyd. It's impossible for a police force to reform its way out of a legacy designed to be oppressive.

The cops smeared her, her name, her life...why? Nothing to do with her sexual harassment complaints against "the force," I'm sure.
Gee, and people wonder why "police unions/fraternal organizations and "brother"hoods aren't quite so popular with the "working classes."
Unfortunately, as a woman who is even more other than us "white" women, I dread to read about Ms. Young's experience following this.
Please tell me there is some form of civilian protection for her and her family.
