As a new era dawns in Washington, state attorneys general, who have filed nearly 140 lawsuits against President Donald Trumps administration over the last four years, are also preparing for what is to come in the next administration. Its a welcome change for someone like Maura Healey, Massachusettss attorney general, who has joined more than 100 of those suits, on everything from Trumps family-separation policy to census issues to environmental protections. I dont think you can overstate how much energy and effort it took to hold the line against the Trump administration that was doing things so entirely unprecedented and in violation of so many norms and the rule of law, she said in an interview with Vanity Fair earlier this month.
The work, however, is not done, as the country reckons with coronavirus and the Black Lives Matter movement, and issues around free, fair, and trusted elections continue, even after Joe Bidens decisive win. Healey discussed what lies ahead, what Republicans need to do to help bring our country together, and what she thinks should happen to a postWhite House Donald Trump: Im going to be limited in what I can say, she told me, but it is important that Donald Trump, his enablers, those who acted in concert with him and furthered actions that may have been illegal, criminal or otherwise, are held accountable.

(2,028 posts)These infamous Trump quotations, the first about his brazen sexual assaults and the second about the coronavirus, reveal Trump's belief system. He has rarely in his life been held accountable for his crimes. To date, those who could have checked his behavior have largely "let [him] get away with it" and simply pay fines and settlements without his having to serve any time in prison, or in the case of Republican congressmen, by either supporting him in his crimes or by simply looking the other way.
Teflon Trump's strategies of suing his detractors and refusing to pay debts have, to date, been very successful in making any legal or political trouble "miraculously go away, disappear." Remember when it came out that Russia was paying bounties for American servicemen and women who were killed and Trump didn't say a word of protest against Putin? Don't hear much about that anymore. This outrage, like so many others, miraculously went away, disappeared.
He must be held accountable.

Thank you. You have our backing. We must right the wrongs and hold all of those who grifted accountable. Let them seek asylum in Russia on the premise that they will seek to overthrow the U.S. government at some future date. One Winter there and they'll be longing for the good ol' days here, when they should have done what's right, followed the law, and not betrayed their country!

(60,071 posts)Trump is in a serious funk, not showing up for work, maybe he should be put on suicide watch. He's already doing it in slow motion suicide with his junk food diet.
When it comes down to it, he is a tragic figure. I guess I should show pity, but he makes it so hard.

(7,016 posts)help bring our country together. It's about time it's said the REPUBLICANS fucked this up and they need to make the effort, the concessions the compromise to fix what they have done the last 50 years not just the last four which are just treasonous. It's not both sides not at all.
CANNOT recommend this particular post highly enough!

(7,606 posts)I do not believe we can have a viable democracy without accountability. Trump needs to die in prison.
Healey says that 70 million voters believing the election was stolen is a problem. I agree there is a problem with people believing misinformation but I also think the polling is mostly measuring what people are willing to tell pollsters (I know the correct answer for our team!) as opposed to what they actually believe.
