The Trump administration repeatedly turned down the chance to order tens of millions of additional doses of Pfizers COVID-19 vaccine even once we understood its effectiveness, The Daily reports.

(32,789 posts)But new reporting from The Times has revealed that Pfizer, the maker of the first vaccine to show effectiveness against the coronavirus, tried unsuccessfully to get the government to lock in 100 million extra doses.
Today, we investigate how the Trump administration missed that opportunity and what the repercussions might be.
U.S. officials had the opportunity to secure enough doses of Pfizers coronavirus vaccine to inoculate most of the country at no upfront cost to the government. Instead, they turned down the offer.
With a smaller-than-expected order from the United States, Pfizer turned to fulfilling orders from other countries, like Britain, which began vaccinating people this week.

(82,849 posts)If, like President Trump and his inner circle, you are tested every day for Covid-19, and if you jump to the front of the treatment line as soon as you test positive, and if you get all the most efficacious treatments immediately, you'll probably recover quite quickly.
But if you can't afford a test every day, if you have to wait your turn should you test positive but be asymptomatic, and if you do get treatment, you will receive only one treatment instead of the full panoply of available treatments, then it sucks to be you. You should have gotten in good with President Trump.
So you can see how a vaccine isn't really a high priority for President Trump.

(37,163 posts)My guess is that one of the companies working on vaccines (likely as part of "Operation Warp Speed" ) has connections to Trump and he wants to use their vaccine whenever it's ready (or close enough to fake it) so that the big buy will dump money into his own pocket and he'll take all the credit for it without the company debunking him like Pfizer did.
Hmmm, that last bit might factor into it too. It's not like he needs it, so he might as well indulge his innate pettiness.
