Because he knows as a Republican candidate that if he lies enough during a debate to the point of causing his Democratic opponent to sigh in exasperation, the corporate media; will focus on the emotional reaction to the bullshit, not the bullshit.

(37,364 posts)without embellishments? When has he just adopted one position and stuck to it? Nothing deep and psychological here. He's a pathological liar who is used to people falling all over themselves to make certain the great man is happy. He's a bullying jerk who raided companies on the pretense he was saving them. He lies like he breathes.

(38,893 posts)Just look at what Reagan said in his "Iran/Contra 'apology' speech":
"I told the American people I did not trade arms for hostages. My heart and my best intentions still tell me that's true, but the facts and the evidence tell me it is not."
Zero sign of an apology in the entire thing. They can get away with it so long as it's =presented= in a compelling manner, with energy of some sort, be it friendly, challenging, etc. People don't listen to the words, they only get the energy.
"Blah blah blah GINGER blah blah blah..."

ROMNEY IS A LIAR!

(20,885 posts)The big lie works. At least it certainly has before. And this was the big audience.
I don't know (yet) whether it was enough to initiate a tipping point, but it will take a lot of work in the trenches to counteract it. Obama has problems as it is trying to counteract the realities of the economy.

(326 posts)...such as the fact that if they tell the truth, they lose votes. I love to point out that the last time a presidential candidate told the truth about Conservative aims was in 1800 when Jefferson beat Adams. Since then, Cons have lied, pretending to feel for the Common Man while chipping away at democratic institutions and achievements one by one.
It's only now that they have blatantly broadcasted their belief that the rich should govern the 98%...almost as if they *know* that they can't be beat at the ballot box. Voter suppression, voter intimidation, voting machine fixing - even another Supreme Court coup de etat? They know the populace didn't rise up in 2000 when the SCOTUS stole our vote. We The Sheeple are nowhere near the quality of the citizenry in other countries who love democracy, those who would have stormed the Supreme Court building and taken heads in 2000.
God, I hate Conservatives.

(1,451 posts)Look Mitt could not get it on the Merits. So he must play the Artful Dodger. Only one thing wrong with his scenario. He did it in front of 50 million viewers. Now he has been nailed down to a Mitt that everyone got a chance to see and hear. He was changing his message every other day. He couldn't land a punch. So now he has decided to lie. With the blessing of the leaders in the Republican Party. So when Mitt goes down, so does the Party. And I got a feeling its going to be a Hard Landing!! Mitt looks like a strong opponent. Mitt is riding on the shoulders of self confidence. But you have seen our President before. He lines his ducks in a row. He paralyzes moving targets. He gives them just enough room. He watches for everything we don't. And he has seen those tax returns,he's Potus. Wouldn't you know most of your opponents weaknesses before you took them on. Now that we know which one is at the party, We can Dance. Don't think the President thought denial Mitt was dancing, but am I glad he showed up. How will Denial Mitt get asked to the White House Dance??? How will he be able to change his positions now that he has had the biggest audience of his life. And as in the Health Care debates when the POTUS puts it down, it will be a slam dunk. We have seen it before. He lets Republicans back themselves into a corner where they cannot govern to this day. 12% approval rating. Now that Mitt is standing still he has no where to pivot. Too late. This will be over by the end of the next Presidential Debate. And they all fall down.
