A0C’s Purebred Puppy Purchase Prompts PETA Pushback

New York – After Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez introduced her new purebred French bulldog puppy on social media, PETA sent the lawmaker a letter urging her to visit a New York City animal shelter to see the scores of wonderful dogs there who desperately need homes. The group also urged her to pledge to adopt her next animal companion (or to adopt a second one now so that the two can keep each other company while she’s busy on Capitol Hill) and to ask her followers to do the same and save a life.

“A0C had a chance to set a compassionate, responsible example in the face of the homeless-animal crisis, but instead, she apparently inadvertently contributed to the problem,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA is urging her supporters not to follow her lead in this case and to stick up for the underdog by choosing to give a lovable mutt a new lease on life.”

snip=============================================================================================

From PETA's letter to A0C:

French bulldogs are inbred in order to produce “breed-specific traits,” which cause health problems that many people who will be influenced by your purchase won’t be able to afford to address. They are particularly at risk because their “cute” features plague them with a lifetime of breathing problems (you may have seen the media uproar this week after a disturbing photo of a pug’s MRI went viral), ear and eye infections, skin irritation, a weak stomach, and other issues—all “man-made.”

I'm curious AmericanCanuck, this is no stream or a river, or an OP about fly fishing, a most enjoyable sport. It's a clip of AOC talking about inequality. Is that your under handed way of saying her talk is bullshit?

I ask that because I'm aware of the sayings about waders, like the "bullshit is getting deep in here I better put on my waders" when the exaggerations of fish size starts. Just a sporting little way of saying one is lying. As an aside, fly fishing is a passion I have long enjoyed so I've fished most gold medal rivers in my state and a couple of surrounding states and I would so buy Tax the Rich waders to go with my sweatshirt just to have them.

Shelter animals are free.

Do people who own $̶6̶8̶ $58 sweatshirts actually cook in them?

I never cook while wearing expensive clothing, but I would imagine "expensive" is a relative term, and for people of means $50+ sweatsuiting is probably a bargain.

Nor would I try to assuage someone's conscience by rationalizing that participating (as a customer) in a practice that exploits animals is actually a means of rescuing those animals.

change it. Maybe PETA should concentrate on working to get legislation to do away with dog breeders instard of what they are doing. I get it, you don't like her sweatshirt, you think it's over prived and are upset that it's not taxed, like any other clothing in NYS under $110, you don't like her buying a dog and I'm sure there's more about her you don't like but that conversation would take all day and I've wasted enough time this morning. You have a nice day.

http://affinitymagazine.us/2017/11/26/heres-10-outrageously-problematic-things-peta-has-done-and-why-you-shouldnt-support-them/

1. PETA kills tens of thousands of pets and domestic animals

Despite advocating for the rights of animals, PETA has one of the largest kill shelters in America. In 2016, 71.9% of cats and dogs taken in by PETA were euthanized, and only 2.9% were adopted. Additionally, from 2003 to 2013, a total of 29,426 domestic animals such as dogs, cats and rabbits were killed by PETA. Not to mention that various instances have come to light where pets were forcibly taken and euthanized without their owner’s consent. This certainly is a disgustingly high amount of domestic animals being killed for an organisation who claims to not only be in support of animal rights, but whose primary mission with their animal shelters is to find a permanent home for pets.

PETA puts a high proportion of animals down, Nachminovitch explains, because it ministers to those that many other shelters turn away, often because of the shelters’ ”no kill” policies.

“There’s a certain plausibility to the line they’re taking,” said Waldau. “If you take the very worst problems that others can’t solve, your rate of putting dogs down is going to be much higher than anybody’s who has taken on the simple problems, the easy ones, the golden retrievers of life.”

A spokesman at the Humane Society of the United States, the largest animal welfare group in the nation, said it would not comment on PETA’s euthanasia rate or the bill in the Virginia Legislature. The Humane Society’s statement on euthanasia supports the practice as a last resort.

The US constitution stipules that the president must be at least 35 years old. Ocasio-Cortez turns 35 less than a month before the next election. She is already campaigning from her kitchen without knowing it.
