This really is the best. And something I have never seen or heard a politician do in my life.

(18,337 posts)New York After Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez introduced her new purebred French bulldog puppy on social media, PETA sent the lawmaker a letter urging her to visit a New York City animal shelter to see the scores of wonderful dogs there who desperately need homes. The group also urged her to pledge to adopt her next animal companion (or to adopt a second one now so that the two can keep each other company while shes busy on Capitol Hill) and to ask her followers to do the same and save a life.
A0C had a chance to set a compassionate, responsible example in the face of the homeless-animal crisis, but instead, she apparently inadvertently contributed to the problem, says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. PETA is urging her supporters not to follow her lead in this case and to stick up for the underdog by choosing to give a lovable mutt a new lease on life.

$50+ sweatshirts and $500+ puppies are things many working folks would probably roll their eyes at as they struggle to put food on their tables.
Autumn
(45,120 posts)You think she's the only person that buys things while people are struggling? A dog or a $200 dollar hair cut? I remember that one well, as always the pukes had a lot of fun complaining about that too. Like all elected Dems she took an oath of office, not a vow of poverty. Now about that stimulus? Who is to blame for that? AOC? Did you notice she bought salmon??
People are going to complain about her no matter what. Dems. OMG she bought a dog! Pukes. OMG she bought an expensive used outfit and borrowed another for a photo shoot!

For years my parents contributed to the North Shore Animal League, and my sister worked there (volunteer, no pay) on weekends several years. A great organization.

(18,337 posts)North Shore generally has a glut of puppies in January after people have tired of taking care of the purebred pets they bought for Christmas or on a whim.

(45,120 posts)I'm curious AmericanCanuck, this is no stream or a river, or an OP about fly fishing, a most enjoyable sport. It's a clip of AOC talking about inequality. Is that your under handed way of saying her talk is bullshit?
I ask that because I'm aware of the sayings about waders, like the "bullshit is getting deep in here I better put on my waders" when the exaggerations of fish size starts. Just a sporting little way of saying one is lying. As an aside, fly fishing is a passion I have long enjoyed so I've fished most gold medal rivers in my state and a couple of surrounding states and I would so buy Tax the Rich waders to go with my sweatshirt just to have them.

Do people who own $̶6̶8̶ $58 sweatshirts actually cook in them?
I never cook while wearing expensive clothing, but I would imagine "expensive" is a relative term, and for people of means $50+ sweatsuiting is probably a bargain.

(18,337 posts)I would never assume that someone I don't know purchased a designer pet because they were lonely or isolated.
Nor would I try to assuage someone's conscience by rationalizing that participating (as a customer) in a practice that exploits animals is actually a means of rescuing those animals.
Autumn
(45,120 posts)change it. Maybe PETA should concentrate on working to get legislation to do away with dog breeders instard of what they are doing. I get it, you don't like her sweatshirt, you think it's over prived and are upset that it's not taxed, like any other clothing in NYS under $110, you don't like her buying a dog and I'm sure there's more about her you don't like but that conversation would take all day and I've wasted enough time this morning. You have a nice day.

Despite advocating for the rights of animals, PETA has one of the largest kill shelters in America. In 2016, 71.9% of cats and dogs taken in by PETA were euthanized, and only 2.9% were adopted. Additionally, from 2003 to 2013, a total of 29,426 domestic animals such as dogs, cats and rabbits were killed by PETA. Not to mention that various instances have come to light where pets were forcibly taken and euthanized without their owners consent. This certainly is a disgustingly high amount of domestic animals being killed for an organisation who claims to not only be in support of animal rights, but whose primary mission with their animal shelters is to find a permanent home for pets.

A factual search reveals that Affinity Magazine has failed a fact check by an IFCN fact checker. They also did not correct the article after the fact.
Overall, we rate them Left-Center biased based on story selection and Mixed for factual reporting due to a failed fact check without proper correction. (D. Van Zandt 8/19/2017) Updated (8/21/2018)

It's probably best to be wary of such sources of information on any and all topics, whether or not they affirm biases.
This is what happens when you conflate racial bias, victim blaming, and the mistreatment of Otto Warmbier.
