(3,974 posts)He was the first to call the news media liberal.
He started the racist southern strategy.
It all started there and this is the result after 50 years.

(9,062 posts)I can understand why a politician would embrace alternative facts. They really are quite convenient.
What I can't understand is why voters and the news sources they follow permit them to do it.
So now the Republicans and Fox are caught in the no-man's land of supporters who are used to the current level of disinformation and those who want to turn it up a couple notches. Once you open that door it is too difficult to close again.
Fox's watchdog when Trump calls in is Maria Bartiromo, how nods and says "uh huh uh huh" to all his election fraud nonsense.

(34,857 posts)Prior to that act, the GOP was not much of a viable national party. Eisenhower won but he won on the back of the New Deal. From 1933 to 1969, Republicans held the White House for only eight years.
But LBJ signed away the South and that provided the Republican Party a new lease on life. Nixon then used his Southern Strategy to appeal to white Southern voters and the rest is history. The GOP lost its regional support in the Northeast and had to grow it in the South, which they did. That forced 'em to become more and more conservative and because of it, we've got the party we have today.

(36,631 posts)The brainwashing was fairly crude back around Nixon's time, but the strong racism was enough to work with. By 2016, Cambridge Analytica and social media allowed for micro-targetting with a multitude of triggering grievances.
