About those Proud Boys in kilts

The kilts were ordered from a company called Verillas, which is LGBTQIA+ owned and very progressive. They have a line for Pride. The owner of Verillas saw the photo of the jackasses and realized they were wearing $750.00 worth of their merchandise. Horrified, Verillas made a $1000.00 donation to NAACP to counteract the Proud Boys flabby-assed hate.

snip-"The Trump Organization has settled a £225,000 legal bill with the Scottish government after it lost a long court battle against a windfarm near its Aberdeenshire golf course.

The Scottish government said Donald Trump’s family firm had agreed to pay its legal fees before a dispute over those costs went to adjudication by a court-appointed auditor.

The Guardian revealed last month that the government had accused the Trump Organization of refusing to pay its legal costs despite a court order earlier this year after Trump lost a UK supreme court case in 2015."

(Scots from Northern Ireland) settled in the plateaus, foothills, and mountains of Appalachia as small farmers in colonial times. It is not true that today they are inherently, by ethnicity or by where they live, racial supremacists or supporters of the Proud Boys.

There are RW extremists of the Proud Boys type in the Midwest, and even in parts of my own state of NY. It is not accurate to characterize the Scots-Irish in America or people of Appalachia as Proud Boys stereotypes.

Most came here before the Revolutionary War.

My mom was like 100% Scot-Irish, British etc.

Many don't like terms like, "Italian-American", so they ditched any connections to the old world generations ago. The Civil War loss also created a culture shift for them. In 2017, I found out that my mom had a bunch of slavery hidden in the past. I have no idea if her parents ever told her. Based on records, my great grandfather was born into a prosperous household with slaves in North Carolina. He died an orchard worker in Florida.

Did they erase the past or did my mom lie? I have no idea. My mom always said they were "too poor for slaves"...Almost everywhere I looked on her side of the family, I was hit with some form of slave schedule in the 1850 or 1860 census. They lost their wealth after the war.

60. We had a wave of settlers who were Scots-Irish in the 1700s
Sun Dec 13, 2020, 03:19 PM
Dec 2020

They were the foundational white ethnic group of the Appalachians, and then of the working class South and Ohio Valley. Protestant, very Protestant, but never WASPS — quite erroneously lumped in with them, according to Jim Webb. Fierce fighters for thousands of years. Can hold a grudge for generations (see: The Troubles. See also: Hatfields and McCoys). Heirs to a ferocious honor-culture.

How did the Scots end up in Northern Ireland? Short version: the British formed the Ulster Plantation, 1609, by seizing and colonizing the vast area most resistant to British rule. No one forgets a wrong, ever.

My mother did 5 books of genealogy in her life, and was usually able to eventually trace family lines “across the water” (i.e. the Atlantic). Not my dad’s family name — that petered out in 1775 in Boston. 1775 would have put James Cassidy close to the end of the Scots-Irish migration, I have since discovered, so that might be a clue. The identifiable Irish, the Mulloolys, O’Haras, and the rest, were the Catholics.

I recommend —always— James Webb’s “Born Fighting: How the Scots-Irish Shaped America.” The man is a superb storyteller, and this is a much better book than “Hillbilly Elegy” : deeper, richer, more fully realized. There’s much to know and consider beyond poverty and dysfunction : presidents, military from top to bottom, so much of what we take for granted in American history and culture. He doesn’t skip over the sad and bad parts, as they were part of the shaping of America.

Second book, or one chapter of it: “Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell, Chapter 6 —Harlan, Kentucky: ‘Die like a man, like your brother did!’ Gladwell is the one who pegged the mindset as “a virulent form of honor culture.” And there we will find a clue to the curdled remnants who form the Proud Boys and their ilk.

But if you only read one book, make it Jim Webb’s. I learned an immense amount about a region that was alien to me (my ties are to California and Hawai’i) and about a culture (not the Proud Boys, not the Klan) that so often was right before my eyes.

POSTSCRIPT: I see a number of posters objecting to the term “hillbilly.” Please recognize it has made a comeback due to J.D. Vance’s 2016 “Hillbilly Elegy: a memoir of a family and culture in crisis,” which is about his own family.

My son in law was a re-enactor at ren faires, with a Scottish group. (where he and my daughter met!) An impressive amount of fabric goes into those things.

Not only are they kilts, they are cloaks, pockets, sashes, and more. When they are taken off, they can be a blanket or ground cloth, or boh.

At the demonstration I saw, I think they said that at least three meters are needed to make a really good kilt. Any less, and you have to reduce how many pleats you have. The demonstration in the video has fabric that is at least 54" wide or a meter and a half. That is a LOT of cloth!

Of course, someone my size would probably need more than nine yards - but less than 54" wide - except women wore their kilts longer so maybe 54" would be fine. Let's see, my inseam is 29" so for ankle length that would leave 35" for the sash, cloak, and pocket variations. Sounds about right!

All these MAGAs are just digging their holes deeper and deeper. Wasting time and money fighting lost causes. Demographics are changing, they will never hold national office again. The Asian kids, Indian kids, kids of liberals, are educating themselves in the future economy of green energy and technology and the cloud. The liberal suburbs are growing fast and becoming more affluent.

Yet these MAGAs keep falling further and further behind, dooming themselves and any kids or grand kids to lower and lower economic status. News flash....does not matter if you are 6'3", mean looking, with 20 guns at your house.....that nerdy, skinny progressive will own the company and the future.

Trump is not going to be the force they think he is after Jan 20th. His only power will be to pick candidates in already deep, deep red areas. So what? These MAGAs will lose status and power and economic standing year after year after year. Not sure how that is 'winning'.

Those hours and money spent traveling to DC and walking around trying to look tough would have been better spent taking their sons or nieces to computer coding classes. They are fighting a cause that was lost long ago.
