(8,820 posts)what Cuomo did is get rid of a state law which considered state crimes to be in jeopardy if federal crimes were pardonned. its strictly a state law issue. As a matter of fact its already the case in most states. Trump can still be pardoned for federal crimes but if there are also state crimes ny state will go forward.

(8,183 posts)Kind of feels like an important step towards "justice for all" in the context of this autocratic regime.
Time to move on with the rest of the day now.
Thanks Nd!.

(17,388 posts)Does it also mean that someone could be convicted by both NY State and the Federal government for the same exact crime?

(22,669 posts)Settled by SCOTUS in Gamble v. US 7 to 2. Ironically, Alito wrote the majority opinion. And this law is tailor made for the blanket pardons we'll see shortly that tie the hands of a Biden Justice department. Also makes that crazy ass idea of self pardoning moot.
Since NY bans that. The whole reason this law is needed is it was unclear as to the case of pardon.

(26,436 posts)picked by Biden. Cuomo is a lawyer, but has not practiced law in court for many years (if ever). Cuomo has repeatedly said that he has no interest in a federal position. He was Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under Clinton and says that was enough of federal government for him.

(1,249 posts)Pardon given in case, in advance, a person is charged? That makes no sense should not be recognized by any court.

(3,585 posts)Cuomo signed that a year ago. In fact, the linked CNN article is from October of 2019. Im confused as to why its being tweeted about over a year later.

(7,400 posts)Some stories are worth repeating. Too many are forgotten down the great memory hole.
But the tweet made it seem as if the law and signing thereof had just happened - which led to the OP doing the same (not a criticism of the OP, just the tweet). It should have been worded differently so as not to give that impression. JMO, though.
No worries.
