Question about DU jury service.

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by EarlG (a host of the General Discussion forum).

I wasn't sure where to post this but I got ask for jury service and I wasn't able to complete due to the thread being so long I could never find the "red" post I was supposed to judge. It just wasn't there, so I backed-out and ask to be removed from consideration. Did anyone else have this problem?

And sometimes I just don't feel well-enough informed about a particular topic to make a fair judgement.

And sometimes I just know I can't be fair because of my own biases.

I don't think I've had a situation where I couldn't find the red post, but I remember something else happened a little while back that I thought was odd. And oddly, I don't remember what it was.

Remember?

You used to get a link to the thread in question but the Admins changed that a couple years ago (at least) and I assume with the logic that you could better address the actual merits of the post if you had less context. Or so it seems to me.

So I don't even bother to try and find the thread, I just look at what the software provides and go from there.

Frankly, I've found that a lot of the alerts I get called to jury on are questions of opinion, and not deliberate misinformation, to wit;

I've regularly served on juries for alerts that are for "peddling right wing conspiracies" (or whatever that category is) and very often, the post in question is simply sharing a news item he/she found interesting.

Putting up a link to a story that someone might find distasteful, or is somewhat less than flattering of a Democratic politician are not grounds for an alert, in my mind. And certainly not grounds for a hide.

I'm for freedom of conscience and expression, so it has to be pretty egregious for me to alert on anything, but it does seem there are way too many here that are a wee quick on that little "Alert abuse" hyperlink.

Putting a link to some rightwing source with discussion of why it's being posted doesn't constitute "peddling". We should be able to discuss what the enemy is saying or doing. To me, "peddling" means "promoting".

Same for posting something critical of a Democrat. I don't consider a post to be "bashing" if the poster states a valid policy or action criticism. I have alerted on almost nothing over the years. If I don't like something, I just move on unless it's really over the top.

It sometimes seems that some people are out to take down certain posters, and probably have successfully done so in the past. I've seen things get hidden where another post in the same thread said the same thing and was let stand.

I couldn't even see the post I was supposed to adjudicating on in the initial jury decision view, so looked for the thread on GD, found the post (it was in a very long exchange), decided to let it stand, then when I clicked to do so, the post disappeared off the right-hand edge again, so I couldn't complete the process!

In the end, I managed to cancel jury service by using the link in the banner at the top of the thread, otherwise I'd still be stuck in jury limbo.

I used to get into that sort of thing, and after a while I realized I was just being stupid. The "ignore" key is your friend.

If I had been able to find the final post, and the "clearly breaks the rule" button, I probably would have used it.
