Gov. DeSantis suggests one dose of Pfizer vaccine may be enough
The government is allocating the vaccination on a per capita basis.

Gov. Ron DeSantis just a few days ago said that Americans need to unify behind the science that has led to the rapid development of vaccines. So it was a bit strange that DeSantis on Friday said that perhaps the number of Florida residents who receive COVID-19 vaccinations could be boosted by not following Pfizer Inc.s recommended instructions for its vaccine candidate.
The federal government is imminently expected to announce its approval of Pfizers vaccine candidate and, within 24 hours of approval, begin shipping the vaccine to Florida and other states. DeSantis said Florida will receive less of the supply than what was initially anticipated, so he came up with a possible way to stretch out the states inoculations.
Instead of giving two doses, as recommended by the pharmaceutical manufacturer, to high-risk populations such as nursing home residents and front-line hospital workers, perhaps one dose could do, the Governor suggested Friday.
DeSantis pointed to an article in The Wall Street Journal it was an opinion piece written by neuroscientist Michael Segal about the efficacy of the one-dose approach. DeSantis referred to the second dose as a booster shot, echoing Segals choice of words.

The vaccine was proven not to be effective until the second dose.

(17,506 posts)clinical trial showed 52% effectiveness after the 1st shot. The 2nd shot has regularly been referred to by Fauci and other medical pros as a "booster".
An interesting question is if just 1 dose of the Pfizer or Moderna drug is enough for people who have had and recovered from covid19.

But it is unclear how long this protection will last, underscoring the importance of getting the second dose that brings the efficacy rate to near 95% after seven days of inoculation.
The first dose is there to train the immune system, said Mark Slifka, a professor and vaccine researcher at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU). You really need that second dose to boost the immune system to its highest peak levels to give you the most durable immunity.
The population may even need a third booster dose of the vaccine later on, Slifka said, but researchers have yet to conclude how long the two-dose vaccine will provide immunity.
We may eventually have a one-dose vaccine. Johnson & Johnson has been developing one, but they wont seek FDA approval until next year at the earliest.
It is relatively common for vaccines to require two or more doses to boost immunity. For example, both the chicken pox vaccine and the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine require two doses. Many children's vaccines, like the tetanus shot, even require three doses.
