Guys, I'm not understanding why people are concerned when President-Elect Biden choses a Dem. from the House for a position. He's nominating Deb Haaland for Secretary of the Interior but she's from New Mexico which has a Dem. Governor. Doesn't the Governor appoint someone - another Dem - to take her seat? So we haven't lost anything...what am I missing here?

(31,997 posts)They can appoint someone to a Senate vacancy until the next regular general election. The House vacancies remain vacant until a special election can be called and the winner certified.

(8,329 posts)The only way to the House is by election.
The senate in some states hold special elections, in others, the governor appoints, some the governor appoints until the special election, others the governor appoints until the next federal election ( like we are currently seeing in GA).
But the only way to the Peoples House is by election.

(25,853 posts)I really, really wish Biden hadn't appointed her. Tom Udall is retiring from the Senate and he'd have been an excellent choice. Or surely there are other Native Americans who don't currently hold office who might have been good.
