This afternoon when Joe Biden introduced his new Secretary of the Interior, Deb Haaland....

I got a lump in my throat.

Then she got up and gave a synopsis of her life and her family's life in the Pueblo Nation.

It started again.

If he accomplishes nothing else in the next four years, this appointment and all the others in his already historic cabinet are spectacular.

BTW, I didn't realize that Jennifer Granholm was a "Canuck". She said mother was a "Newfie"!

Highly experienced nominees who are eager to do the actual job. I feel like we've gotten so jaded in the past 4 years that this is a surprise.

....Yellow Ribbon" after the September 11 attacks?

It's a great story.

Basically the people of Gander (population 10,000) accepted about 6,600 Transatlantic passengers that were in the air when the World Trade Center was attacked. They housed and fed them for several days until it was safe for air traffic in the US again.

I do remember when they took in a lot of passengers on 9/11. I was working for a large airline at the time and we were told right away that some of our planes had landed at Gander.

....to Gander.

The people of the town treated those 6200 passengers like royalty. They opened their homes to people and converted churches into dormitories. Never a question about "who is going to pay for this?"

Here's a view of their airport on September 12:

This is an existential emergency for billions of human beings. That we might accomplish "nothing else" is completely, incredibly unacceptable.

Deb Haaland has a hugely important job in a team with an incredibly enormous mandate. Let's be big enough to at least realize that.

We owe it to ourselves and all those who are already dying, most of whom are neither white nor nonwhite privileged Americans. Though some already in big trouble are, and it's threatening more of us every day.

Btw, 33 Americans dying every minute from pandemic disease right now? Climate crisis.
