I apologize if this has been posted already -
As Obama reminisced about his grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, who died shortly before Obama was elected president in 2008, the tweet appeared on KitchenAid's official Twitter account, @KitchenAidUSA: "Obamas gma even knew it was going 2 b bad! 'She died 3 days b4 he became president!"
The outrage was almost immediate, with angry Twitter users threatening to boycott the Benton Harbor, Mich., company.
The appliance maker, which is owned by Whirlpool Corp., quickly deleted the tweet. Cynthia Soledad, a KitchenAid marketing executive, issued a series of apologies via Twitter and Facebook.
"I would like to personally apologize to President @BarackObama, his family and everyone on Twitter for the offensive tweet sent earlier," she wrote. "It was carelessly sent in error by a member of our Twitter team who, needless to say, won't be tweeting for us anymore."
Soledad said in a separate statement that the employee meant to post the tweet on a personal account but mistakenly sent it instead through the corporate account. She referred to the tweet as a "tasteless joke."

---------------
Tasteless joke? When did the death of a loved one become a joke, especially when it was about the woman who raised the President of the United States?
If anyone tweeted something like that in my name, they would be out the door.

One part of the job is to search twitter for mentions of their company, and answer the tweets if appropriate. I had Whole Foods do that will me a few weeks ago.

(34,189 posts)That's where I got my vintage KitchenAid for $40. While it has to be at least thirty years old it is in nearly new condition. The guy selling it had inherited his grandmother's house with all her belongings and had no use for a heavy duty mixer. I did have to go out and buy a dough hook for it, but it was still a bargain.
I've seen new in the box ones sold there, too but they go for more than I paid - probably were wedding presents that people didn't need or want.
Buying on Craigslist lets you get a KitchenAid without giving money to the company.

(22,271 posts)ONE person twatted one tweet and you want to boycott the entire company forever and ever? That's pretty severe. I hope no one judges you like that. Also a reminder that KitchenAid Mixers are still made in the U.S.A. so a boycott affects them as well. If this was the company that made that statement then I'd be right behind you. (13,992 posts)Some low-level douchebag tweeted something for which he/she has most assuredly been fired. I think the KitchenAid spokesperson was practicing a little understatement when she said the person "won't be tweeting for us anymore."
I can't imagine a set of circumstances where that person would still be employed.
They hired and fired an asshole and apologized for what he did.

(2,097 posts)I know people who tweet for institutions. They're young, frequently lacking in maturity, and (like lots of people under 30) think everything they say and do deserves a trophy. I have no doubt the hammer came down hard on the tweeter, and the fear of God was put into the rest of the team.
Idiocy at the highest ranks of a company is one thing; but idiocy in the lowest ranks is simply the American way. My KitchenAid will be mixing up some delicious bread dough this weekend, same as always.

(19,458 posts)And the RNC and other PACS have been paying people to blast anti-obama tweets, comments, etc, so no doubt the asshole they outsourced to, was ALSO doing RNC work, and realized they were logged into the wrong account.
I have a twitter account for my political stuff, and I do social media for a company I work for. One day I sent out a company tweet on the political page... it happens. Lucky it wasn't the other way around.
Corporations are STUPID in that they outsource the very FACE and VOICE of the company to people that have no biz representing them..

ChisolmTrailDem
(9,463 posts)for a business client of mine. I get no input from the client who, as far as I can tell, doesn't even know what Twitter is. I also have several Twitter accounts of my own, depending on the subject. So, I have one for politics. One night I was tweeting on my personal political account. And, trust me, I give those repugs hell. Then I logged out to make a tweet on the company account to announce a sale. I made that tweet and then went back to DU.
You can guess what happened next. I saw something on DU that I just had to comment on on Twitter. But I forgot to log out of the company account. Fortunately I realized very quickly what I had done and deleted the tweet. And at that point, not one month ago and after 6 years with the client, I didn't know his political leanings. Since then I have gotten a comment from the client, in response to the comment "shaking the bushes", that said: "we shook the Bushes, now we need to shake the Obamas".
So, it's easy when dealing with more than one account to post to the wrong one in haste or not paying attention to which account you're logged into. I got lucky. The KitchenAid guy/gal, not so much.
