Yay! Usually I miss out on celestial events, but the clouds parted a while ago and I was able to see the moon and the Christmas Star (aka the Great Conjunction.)
A simple pleasure, I know, but in 2020 that is about all I can expect to get.

(6,843 posts)I actually saw four of Jupiters moons and could make out the rings on Saturn

(2,219 posts)It was still impressive to see the moon and the two planets. These were the only things in the sky that were bright enough to see.

(6,843 posts)Small that I used to pack in. I was surprised I could see as much as I did

(26,507 posts)I really wanted to catch this celestial event. I'm glad I did. Kind of put me in the Christmas Spirit.

(13,078 posts)still very close to each other and will be for several nights, depending on how you define "visually still very close to each other". As they were for several nights before the 21st. But as on the 21st and before, one has to get out soon after sunset, in the southwest sky low on the horizon, because it sets about 1 1/2 hours after sunset.

(320,660 posts)I still haven't seen it. Saw the big ol Moon though just now.
I'll try tomorrow night!

(13,078 posts)because of clouds EVERY NIGHT (Minneapolis. This is highly unusual BTW). But weather forecast is for "mostly clear" in the soon-after-sunset hours of Dec 23, so might be my big chance. I was out just now (about 410 AM local time!) and it was clear and saw plenty of stars.

Ill hafta go out and view Mars on decent evening soon. The Moon right now is ruining deep sky viewing.

(24,752 posts)due to the mountains...Jupiter and Saturn were below our horizon BUT Mars and Uranus are incredibly bright...for me they are on the eastern aspect of the moon. Mars in particular was showing off.
