(71,542 posts)when he said it could be left to the 'next administration and it might be him..." All the people who are going to starve and die of exposure...it is just horrifying.

(6,721 posts)These so called games batter the feelings of those already gazing into the abyss. Its sadly insensitive no matter whos doing it. When one is hungry, nearly or now homeless and facing economic disasterthe talk of games must be bewildering. Id sure like to see the whole thing framed differently.

(71,542 posts)and soon to be homeless Americans. I hate Trump with a passion of a 2000000000000000000000 burning sun...but now is not the time for revenge by putting things in the bill that hurts Trump.

(33,643 posts)Would've just torpedoed that idea. He will definitely not go for that number now, guarantee you that.
Best we can hope for is that he decides he wants a bigger number, to outdo the Dems.

(24,922 posts)Trump will lay claim to the whole thing
He'll be able to say, that the whole 2k was dead in the water, then he jumped in for the American people and got all this extra money
He'll get to put his name on the checks
His signing ceremony will have who he wants there
It'll be the beginning of his 2024 campaign
And...oddly enough... I'm okay with that
extra bonus: That odious toad Rand Paul will be very angry and we can mock him claiming it was his idea. After all he did say, "Why not 2,000...?"

(71,542 posts)Why would you believe Trump?
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)I just said the amount won't be $2K since Trump is now certainly aware that's the amount proposed in an amendment by AOC and RT.
That's all I'm asserting.
$0 is also not $2K.

(71,542 posts)seen them run out of food...kids are going to be hungry. And the fact we are likely to get nothing is a disaster for real people. My heart is broken. We could literally have people starve to death and families living on the street in January...where the cold is life threatening in many places. I can't consider this politically. I am not criticizing you. But people think this is our ticket to winning Georgia...I don't know if it is. And we sure as hell will get nothing if the democrats don't win. People are desperate and it is Christmas which makes it worse. This will also mean no covid money and more will die.

(6,467 posts)According to the Congressional Research Service's document, U.S. Senate Vacancies: Contemporary Developments and Perspectives -- Updated April 12, 2018 (https://crsreports.congress.gov/product/pdf/R/R44781):
The 36 states listed below authorize their governors to fill Senate vacancies by appointment, with the temporary Senator serving the balance of the term or until a special election is held concurrently with the next statewide general election. General elections are scheduled with relative frequency throughout the states. They are held in every state at least once in every even numbered year, for Representatives in Congress, Senators, if applicable, and, quadrennially, for the President and Vice President, as well as for a broad range of state officials, including governors, legislators, and other state and local elected officials. In addition, a number of states schedule statewide elections for local elected officials for odd-numbered years. In several statesHawaii, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, and Virginiaif a Senate vacancy occurs in close proximity to a regularly scheduled statewide primary or general election, the appointed Senator serves until the following statewide election.

TLDR... If some unnamed Kentucky senator leaves his seat, willingly or otherwise, his replacement will be chosen by Governor Andy Beshear, said replacement to serve until the previous senator's term ends or until a special election held along with the next state-wide election.
Think Martha McSally. She was named to the Senate by Republican governor of Arizona Doug Ducey, after Jon Kyl resigned, and then she had to run in 2020 to hold her temporary seat. Of course, Martha lost big time, but we can hope that Andy Beshear does a better job of picking a replacement.

(53,390 posts)it also almost certainly wouldn't matter. KY is pretty much a lost cause in terms of statewide federal offices.

(67,782 posts)...and the bill, as a bill and not an amendment, was written and proposed by Kamala Harris back in May 2020.
Sen. Harris, Kamala D. [D-CA] (Introduced 05/20/2020)
This bill provides for a monthly rebate to individuals and their dependents for the period beginning March 2020, and ending on the third month after the date on which the Department of Health and Human Services determines that the COVID-19 (i.e., coronavirus disease 2019) public health emergency has ended. The rebate is $2,000 per individual ($4,000 for individuals filing a joint tax return) plus $2,000 for each dependent of such individual, not exceeding three dependents. The rebate is reduced for individuals whose adjusted gross income exceeds specified levels. Rebates are not subject to garnishment or set offs by financial institutions.
