His criticism of Trump over the weekend is actually posturing for the 2024 nomination.
As soon as I heard his comments I knew what he was after.

Two of the messiah's they will send to try and save the poop pile that is now the GOP. I think their efforts are futile after the T**** fiasco.

I couldn't believe MSNBC gave this weasel so much air time.
Greybnk48
(10,168 posts)for that long. He's T**** with a brain. A bullying, loud mouthed, misogynistic crook. I'm not sure if he's a racist, he's enough of everything else for me to dislike.

(31,989 posts)Rabid Trump base despises Mitt. They want someone more extreme. Cotton will definitely be on their radar.
exboyfil
(17,862 posts)Cotton needs to figure out what to promise Trump to get this done.
Also he needs to do a few other things.
Make wardrobe choices to reduce the prominence of his neck. Maybe it is just me, but it is distracting.
Try to get some acting lessons and go on to some sort of reality show. Maybe something created by Trump.
Divorce his wife and marry Gina Carano.

I guess that a former professional wrestler might be the equivalent of a former nude model

Not a very good actress, but the role is written for her.

(16,616 posts)they are on and I'm more looking at Ted Cruz, Rubio, or another radical GOPer.
My big fear right now, today, is Cruz. But 4 years is a ways off.
EDIT: Ted Cruz was the favorite of the Christian Nationalists until an upset primary, whereafter they threw their support to Trump.
Turin_C3PO
(13,975 posts)unless something drastic happens in the next few years, the MAGA base will determine who the nominee is and that man wont be Romney.
jcgoldie
(11,631 posts)The Magas despise Romney, they would vote for literally anyone else in the primary. Outspoken criticism of Trump is not going to win anything in the GOP thats why they are all trying to keep their heads down. Romney can afford to be sane in Utah where he has a unique constituency, but for the national GOP its poison.
Amishman
(5,557 posts)Cruz is probably one of the front-runners as it stands now. Well known, MAGAish but still acceptable by the rest of their party.
Also should ensure Texas stays red that cycle

Now, however, his 54-year-old daughterwhose devotion to an unapologetic ally muscular foreign policy is every bit as ardent as his ownhas emerged as one of the Republican Partys fastest-rising leaders.

She has also managed to do that while being one of the few Republicans to repeatedly reprimand Trump and his allieson everything from abandoning the Kurds to criticizing former Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch to sowing distrust of Dr. Anthony Fauciwithout completely alienating them. Her sharp wit in swatting down GOP firebrand Jim Jordan, known for his frequent challenges to House leadership, when he and several members questioned her loyalty to TrumpI look forward to hearing your comments about being a team player when were back in the majoritybecame a hit among many of her Republican colleagues who long ago tired of Jordans tactics.
Behind her veneer of support for President Trumpshe votes with him something like 97 percent of the time, she bragged on Fox & Friends in Julytheres a far harsher reality: Many of her and her fathers closest friends and ideological allies have become the most virulent Trump critics. The large group, which includes former national security adviser John Bolton, Steve Schmidt, Steve Hayes, Bill Kristol, and Jennifer Rubin, are rooting for Liz to restore their brand of conservatism after Trump.
"I've talked to a lot of people about the conversation we have to have in the Republican Party, about how to cut this albatross off from around our necks if he loses, Bolton told POLITICO, referring to Trump. And I think it's going to be very robust across the board."
Schmidt, the former counselor to Dick Cheney and adviser to John McCain who has become a prominent Trump critic, said, If theres a resurgence of conservatism as a functioning political philosophy in this country, Liz Cheney is as good a bet as anybody to be a leader in that. Liz Cheney is certainly not going to be a person over the next 20 years whos fighting to advance nationalism and populism.

It's hard saying this far out but if I had to pick an earlry front runner it would be Cruz. He did alright in 2016 and since he dropped out he's done nothing but cozy up with Trump and win over the maga fanatics.

Working with Sanders for a stimulus might give him a point or two. The Dems can easily use him signing onto the lawsuit against the ACA, compare his time served as MO AG as a Palin style move and then constantly remind everyone that he was great friends with Eric Greitens-and then remind everyone about Greitens. Sales of grey duct tape will go up.

No, Im not completely writing him off because Trump has taught us that its foolish to write anyone totally off, but I dont think his chances are all that great.
