(12,744 posts)Trump doesn't need to do a thing with it. It dies with the new year.

(18,366 posts)Congress just needs to come back around Dec. 31st which is day nine I think (and last day to veto it). They just need to override by Jan. 3rd (painful but can be done).
sweetloukillbot
(12,744 posts)That would give him longer to hold onto it.

(18,366 posts)I checked and you are right about Sunday. Dec. 21st to Jan. 3rd - 13 days with two Sundays. It still seems Congress would have at least one day (possibly two) before the clock resets.

(6,402 posts)But if he holds it until the new session congress would have to vote on it again.
exboyfil
(18,366 posts)but my math still shows a couple of days possible before the new Congress. With the new Congress it would be another 10 days before it became law or the new Congress would be voting again sometime around Jan. 13th.
With all the other chaos going on, it is typical that he is pulling this stunt.

(18,366 posts)to avoid a pocket veto, but they are going to hate coming back to vote before the 3rd.

If the bill isn't quickly sent to Trump, there's a real risk of a "pocket veto" -- where the bill dies because no action was taken before the 117th Congress begins. The 10-day clock for a presidential signature or veto could run into the new congressional session that starts at noon Sunday, Jan. 3, at which point the bill would die. Sundays are excluded from the 10-day count under the Constitution, so enrollment and delivery of the bill would need to be occur by Tuesday night, or possibly Wednesday at the latest.

(19,382 posts)The 600 dollars was an insult.
Wounded Bear
(64,470 posts)Now, we won't get the $600 either, at least not for several additional weeks, and probably not until Biden is sworn in. Throw in that the new Congress, which seats in 3 weeks would have to start over from scratch if this isn't done by end of year.
This was Trump trying to fuck over McConnell because he congratulated Biden as Pres-elect. In addition, he gets to fuck over the rest of us for not voting for him. It's a win-win for Trump.

(19,382 posts)I hope it goes through. I know some who could really use it. Id forgo mine to help them. I think nancy is having it go through the house today. I have my fingers crossed.
Wounded Bear
(64,470 posts)It would damn sure be nice, and there are many desperate people out there that need if far more than I do. My fixed income is safe, and my bills are paid. There ain't any extra money flying around my house, but I survive. I know many people aren't in as secure of a position.
I just know that neither Trump nor McConnell are on our side in this fight. We're just collateral damage to them. If the 2k gets through somehow, I suspect Trump would still veto it, because he's an asshole. It's what he does. I dare him to prove me wrong, though, and even if this does get through it won't improve my opinion of either one of them.
