Dr. Susan Moore, a physician, says she was mistreated at IU North Hospital in Carmel, Indiana before dying from COVID. She was only 52 years old.

"I had to beg to get the Remdesivir because Dr. Bannec said my chest x-ray was normal. I then had to beg for a CT of my chest which I finally got and it showed large mediastinal lymphadenopathy."

(29,202 posts)You are this sick with Covid. You also don't have family who can help.
It's hard WITHOUT dealing with medical racism, misogyny, and Dr.s who never admit they are wrong...
Makes me thankful for the Doctors I had...

On edit: When I posted this comment, I hadn't seen the video, because I am severely hearing impaired, so I wouldn't be able to hear what she said. I still haven't seen the video, for the same reason.
However, even without hearing her say she was being mistreated because of racism, which I've learned that she said because she is quoted in articles about her situation, I knew immediately that was almost certainly the case, because it is just so damned common!

I am so sorry for this poor woman. She was in so much pain and had to go through the frustration of not being taken seriously by the medical personnel who were assigned to care for her and it cost her life.

So wrong what you have to deal with. I assume establishing a relationship with another doctor isnt feasible because you must have tried everything at this point.

(9,354 posts)and not only is she black, she's a woman, and all medical personnel know that women exaggerate (I am a woman BTW).
But I also suspect there is some "doctors are the worst patients" going on.

I don't know how it ranks against race - but missing critical diagnoses (cancer, for example) until it is too late to effectively treat the condition is a well-documented problem for people who fall outside of weight norms.

(58,785 posts)generator of much more bigotry than skin color, ask any black woman of achievement. I knew 3 women who died with primary cause of death negligence due to their gender, and they were all white. For decades the only devices and medications for a number of critical conditions were tested only on men, dosages and will-they-work-on-women? guessed at and too-large devices crammed into women's bodies however they could be.
AND she was asking for narcotics early on. Since the laws have tightened up dramatically, that's an automatic trigger of suspicion in those circumstances. We've had a number of white people on this very forum weeping with despair over undertreated pain.
Tragic, but we owe it to her and all the others to insist they investigate adn find out exactly why this happened, not to just facilely chalk it down to race and be done.

(58,785 posts)using the facile excuse of fighting bigotry to facilely advance it.
Only truth is valid. Getting good care to middle class blacks doesn't save the lives of poor blacks who are denied it. The bigotry against POOR PEOPLE of all races is enormous.
Truth is the most critical element to justice, and only those who demand truth can achieve it.
And it's no comfort to all the people lying in their graves from callous indifference due to some other cause or most likely a combination of that some are roused to outrage only about possible racism against one race.
Celerity
(54,411 posts)than racism in terms of overarching ramifications on one's daily life. As a black woman, I profoundly disagree with you.

Hortensis
(58,785 posts)Btw, black male bigotry against black women is often a serious problem for black women. Discrimination and oppression don't just come from indigenous, Asian, white, and "other."
Of all the racial and gender groups in our nation, disadvantaged, mainly lower income (but how about when those become OLDER?!) black women are routinely tossed the shortest ends of all the sticks, which they get to wade through the rain and mud to pick up and do their best with to care for themselves and their dependents.

(54,411 posts)for us women of colour, racism is far worse than misogyny
it is not even close
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)I threw you the huge issue of age. How about negligence leading to death due to AGE? HUGE factor.
I know grievance politics are big with some, and if you're among them, you have a few more giant ones to add to your list. If your only issue is white-on-black wrongs and you prefer to assume only that killed her, carry on.
But when it comes to caring for yourself in the real world, that could be like watching only for white cars when pulling out onto a speeding highway full of depraved indifference to life due to gender, age, physical and socioeconomic appearance, and inadequate insurance.
Celerity
(54,411 posts)that is a completely false inference
I have never once on this board made any statement that I only care about 'white-on-black wrongs'
it is not an either/or situation, not in the slightest
And again, you trying to say that I (a women of colour) need 'education' on the subject of racism versus misogyny is particularly disturbing.
and
to diminish racism by saying
is using extremely problematic framing

This entire colloquy is so disheartening, but hardly surprising.

(7,401 posts)30 years ago I had to fight like all heck for a friend to get proper care. She was pregnant, on welfare, single, black. She and the baby nearly died. She might have been better off if the child had died. He suffered severe brain damage from lack of oxygen. 10 years of suffering before he died.
I knew in the moment why they were putting her off. I am white, educated, middle class. I raised all hell and got them to pay attention. I wish I could have gotten it done before little Andrew was harmed ....

(63,221 posts)"I hesitate to refer to this man as a physician, and cannot, in good conscience, recommend him. He accused me of being an alcoholic when my liver enzymes were out of whack, and refused to believe that I do not drink alcohol, because of my medication. Told me my numbers looked like what he would see in an alcoholic on a Saturday night in the ER!
I responded that my receiving good medical care depends on my being honest with my doctor. He laughed, and called me a liar. I left immediately, found a new physician, and learned that my medication levels were toxic, and had damaged my liver and kidneys.
I had severely sprained my ankle, and he refused to even look at it, when I voiced my concern. It required surgery to heal properly. He is rude, arrogant, extremely condescending, and seems threatened by informed, intelligent patients. I would advise asking for a new doctor immediately if he walks into your hospital room, and would never refer anyone to his office!"
Asshole! I hope he gets fired and loses his license.

(2,090 posts)When I read it I could help but wonder if the patient who posted this review was black because The whole refused to believe I did not drink alcohol... sure goes along with the mindset Dr. Bannec displayed with Dr. Susan Moore.
I hope he goes under intense review. The publicity cant be great for the hospital so maybe they will actually do something.

(2,090 posts)I grew up in a small Indiana town about 25 minutes southwest of Carmel. What I remember about those living in Carmel is they insisted on pronouncing the town's name as "Car-mel" as in "Carmel, CA", but everyone outside of Carmel pronounced the town as "Kar-mull".
It was a funny game to play with those living in Carmel. "Oh, you live in Kar-mull?" "No, Car-mel." "That's what I said, Kar-mull."
That says about all you need to know of the type living there. White, privileged (yet oddly insecure) wanna be rich.

(15,107 posts)about how hard it is for women to get good healthcare. That was months ago but is still true and will remain true probably forever.
I think this woman had four things going against her, starting with being a woman. She was also black, overweight, and a doctor. It's a deadly combination when you need medical care. And it's criminal what they did to her.

(5,370 posts)and I experienced terrible care under certain doctors, and we are white. In my husband's case, it almost killed him. Sometimes, all if takes is a sociopath.
The fact that she was a doctor must have made it even worse for her. She knew what kind of care she should have been getting, but was powerless to get it.

(19,240 posts)I am also a physician who was also recently in the hospital for COVID. My Decadron and Remdesivir were delayed for two days, and I too had to demand and threaten in order to get the treatment I needed.
The current generation of doctors are too addicted to their "protocols". They do not look at the patient. When your oxygen saturation is "normal" but the patient is breathing 28 times a minute that is not "normal". When an asthmatic says "I need steroids and neb treatments", the asthmatic knows what she is talking about.
I have found that my non-physician husband is listened to by doctors in a way that I am not. I think it is because I am a woman and all women are "hysterical."
