trump's pardons of liars , criminals, and friends will backfire on him badly,

They will after Jan. 20th have targets on their backs to testify after losing their 5th amendment rights, which they'll be forced to to tell the truth , or face more jail time. trump is setting them up by doing this, and some will lie, but some won't knowing they will escape prison. State charges also will await them in addition to new federal charges, and huge legal fees. This will backfire on trump, and his criminal associates .

... I am finally numb; neither angry nor outraged...
... the pardons were expected; but as usual with 45; the extent greater than anticipated...

2. Hoping they challenge his pardons

Where its proven he is involved with them in crimes, and the Supreme Court rules a President can't do that with pardons, or be able to pardon future crimes ( or he could pardon a hitman for his use against his opposition, or others forever), or for a pardon for himself. But putting these liars on the stand again will prove very costly for them all.

them never committing a crime again for the rest of their lives?

Hell, they'll be committing crimes on January 21st. They'll all wind up in jail eventually.

Vagaries and collective illogic can sometimes hinder truthful testimony. The famed "plausible deniability."

As is the admission of guilt when a pardon is accepted.
I'm not a legal mind by any means, but I suspect that some of these people pardoned
will have a rocky road ahead.

Regarding the others, they may think before accepting.

I think it would be one of the great equalizers of the universe if Trump was finally put in jail for selling Pardons.

7. The pardons for Manafort and Stone were specific to their crimes, so 5A protections remain

If it were a Nixon-style pardon, then they would lose all 5A immunity.

The NYTimes gave a mealy-mouthed criticism and tried to equate what Clinton and GHW Bush did, not to mention end with criticizing Biden for his harsh penalties in the '94 crime bill.

9. Agreed. And this last minute "pardon spree" for his criminal conspirators is really, really stupid.

I'm no lawyer, but aren't presidential pardons limited to criminal CONVICTIONS?

Trump is pardoning some of the criminals within his lunatic circle for crimes they were convicted of, and he could conceivably create a constitutional crisis by pardoning himself for crimes he was impeached for (I guess). But he was never impeached, convicted, or even charged (yet) for anything related to the 2016 election, and at this late stage (meaning before Jan 20) there certainly isn't enough time for him to be charged, tried, and convicted of anything else. His little circle of pardoned conspirators are off the hook, but not Trump himself.

And as for Giuliani, with no convictions (yet) on the books, after Jan 20 he will have no cover for Ukraine, 2016, or his recent stupid adventures in the 2020 election. Which means Rudy "the hand grenade" Giuliani is totally screwed.
