Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsChristmas Eve morning early libations thoughts--- upon reading Facebook comments....
I poured bourbon in my coffee this morning. I am spending the day wrapping- cleaning.....just messing around the house.
Sitting there reading Facebook, and some stuff on DU--- I realized one thing I am tired of- sick of-- done with: the word "progressive" bandied about as if it is somehow a bad thing.
So, I have decided to start calling Republicans "Regressives."
It's so much more polite than "Repukes," or "dumbfucks." Doesn't "Regressive" sound better than "Shitforbrains?"
Well, I think so.
I hope everyone is having a calm day- and looking forward to a happier New Year. I know there are so many suffering right now, and I am thinking of them- and those on DU. I have been reading DU since the day I saw the banner at GWB's inauguration (the banner and that glorious egg!!)--- married a DUer that I met here.
Cheers!

(2,869 posts)Hope it catches on. Progressives are not good at packaging ideas simply. This is a good start.

(1,207 posts)I know one of Biden's folks got "in trouble" for using the word, "fucker," which of course was/ is entirely appropriate.
Regressive.
I like it.

I know it sounds like I am just sitting around being a Lush- but, I have done all the dishes, three loads of laundry, and am working on the floors/ bathrooms now.
We are heading to our place in the mountains on Sunday to see snow- and I want everything done

(5,659 posts)That seems to be a thing here in Michigan. And from what I can tell they are mostly run by young, progressive minded people.
I guess Regressives drink swill.

(2,766 posts)But they're all like those business clowns who paid $2,000 for a bottle of wine at dinner, praised its bouquet and flavored nuances while congratulating each other on their superiority -- only to be told by an embarrassed manager that they'd be served up with a $40 bottle by mistake.
In other words, these fools buy culture that they have no sensitivity to actually appreciate -- but, oh my, do they love to smugly show it off, pretentiously.

(5,659 posts)The bring creativity and sense of the community--many only use locally grown ingredients.
I agree that some of the privelidged class likes overly priced wine and booze. But that's a whole different story.

(1,207 posts)We are so freaking lucky in my family. We are in NC- so about 50/50 sniveling fuckwits....wait, I mean Regressives...and are very fortunate to have stayed healthy so far.
So glad you are feeling better!

(8,980 posts)This might just be the beginning of a brand new relationship with the regressive party!
You might have written the best post ever! Any post that starts out with "I poured bourbon in my coffee this morning" has got to be a game changer!
Good work, my friend!

(7,621 posts)I remember the conversations at my family's dinner table when I was 15 were way-to-often about a little known far away land called Viet Nam. For all the points of contention and explanation it still burns into me that things like the Viet Nam war and Donald Trump's ascendance are simply examples of the obvious. There is evil in the world. When evil is up, everything looks like it will never get better. When it's down, it seems like nothing can be wrong. So profound is the nature of adult humans to live in their chosen delusion that when a simple observation reveals the plain fact that about half of us don't know which way is up it's always the other side which is in error.

(1,207 posts)My Great Grandmother, whom I adored more than words can process, was a close friend of Senator Sam Ervin. I well remember him saying "Stephnee- Go pour me a drink!"
I loved her so much- and my memories of Sam Ervin are strictly from a childhood in Morganton, NC-- all of those folks are gone now.
But, "over our heads?" I really need you to explain that crap.

(5,110 posts)by a group of friends I meet with every morning for coffee and discussion, before COVID. We often remark that on many days our moods and confidence can wear thin as reminders of this, that, and the other thing return to mind. Since retiring, I personally find this much less the case.

They should turn their diplomas in and apologize- but, I digress.
No, it's not harsh- it's true- but, Mom and Dad in Ozark, MO aren't going to "get it."

OTOH, fascist, authoritarian fuckheads, works pretty well too.
Id love some Jamison in my coffee this morning, Unfortunately, Id lose all motivation to get stuff done.
Happy Holidays!

(9,684 posts)You say "socialist", I say "fascist".
You say "progressive", I say "regressive". Perfect!
And by the way, I don't consider either term ascribed to us as negative. Call me a socialist all day long. I'm a proud democratic socialist, that's for damn sure.

(1,207 posts)3rd hand- I am 56 years old. I knew all of my grandparents, and many of my greats well; Growing up, we had a picture of my great-something or other (there are still folks in the family named after him) that was captured. My grandparents had a sword on the wall in the den.
These new toe-licker Republicans would love being called that. They have no goddamned idea that an entire portion of the country was burnt down. They are stupid fuckwits that failed history.
That moniker excites the rednecks- they love it.

(1,071 posts)It's warm and raining now, but the temps are supposed to start dropping this afternoon causing the roads to flash freeze. Also it's going to be brutally cold until Saturday! (BYOB!)
That being said--looking forward to being snowed in on Friday....that way I can pretend it's a normal Christmas but we just can't drive on the roads!
Regressive is perfect for them all!

(19,255 posts)I never liked the word "repuke". It sounds too much like a schoolyard taunt.
The question is, will they know what regressive means? We know they aren't going to look it up.

(49,589 posts)Republicans keep trying to demonize who and what we are, "regressives" is a perfect comeback. I am so sick of them trying to change the English language and redefine who Democrats are.
You married a DUer that you met here? That is remarkable! Merry Christmas!

(2,565 posts)I think Repugnant is the best term for them. They are morally, socially, and ethically repugnant.
BobTheSubgenius
(11,764 posts)I've been using and advocating that word for several years now. They are absolutely NOT "conservatives." There is little they want to conserve. They want to drag the world back to...when? Probably a piecemeal society. Family units from 50's TV. An economy from the same era. Strappin' on yer shootin' iron and swaggering downtown, heading for the OK Corral.
And "progressive" and "liberal" are fine appellations. As JFK said, wear it proudly. OK, he didn't actually say that, but that was the gist of it.
All the best to you and yours!
