John Cleese @JohnCleese
Just reading about how, during his last moments in the bunker in Berlin, Hitler was beside himself with fury, screaming blame on the German people for letting him down
Then he shot himself
Room for hope ?

(21,237 posts)They stayed in the closet for fear that they would be discriminated against, shunned by friends and family, or even become victims of violence. Because they were closeted, most people didn't "know" any gay people, anti-gay bigotry perpetuated and most straight people just didn't get it
But then, little by little, gay people started coming out of the closet. People got to know them and found out they're just like other people. They have flaws, just like straight people. Some are wonderful, some are jerks, and some are somewhere in between, just like straight people.
So now, trans and non-binary people are starting to be more open about their gender. Many cisgender people still don't understand trans folk because they've never known any, but little by little, as trans folk people are open about their gender, more cisgender folks will get to know them and hopefully accept them, but there will always be bigots who don't.

(21,237 posts)On one hand, he seems quite against Trump, but on the other hand he has this issue with trans people. But you have to remember that he's still an 81 year old fart, married to a woman 30 years younger.
One would think that having a gay member of Monty Python, Graham Chapman, might make Cleese more understanding, but apparently not. The thing is, Cleese didn't CHOOSE to be a straight cisgender man, he just is. Why can't he accept that everyone isn't the same?
I have a second cousin who is trans, female to male, and when he came out as a man, I wasn't all that surprised. In his case, I think there's a genetic component. He ALWAYS, wanted to wear boy clothes and wore his hair very short. When he hit puberty, he grew a lot of body hair as well as hair on his face. He has cerebral palsy and is in a wheelchair, so his life has always been difficult.
But when he let everyone know his name was Joey, not Julie, I just wanted him to be happy. It took a little getting used to for his parents and grandparents, but they were okay with it and like me, they just want him to be happy. He's very involved in his church and when he told his pastor, the pastor just asked him if he wanted to be baptized again with his new name. He said yes!
Being kind and accepting doesn't cost anyone a damn thing. I wish Cleese and JK Rowling understood that.

(90,311 posts)That looks like one of my senators (Ron Wyden) walking out on trump in the middle of the fawning applause while Nancy Pelosi ripped up trump's script.
Quite satisfying!
