Will Trump "pocket veto" the omnibus spending bill?

Last edited Thu Dec 24, 2020, 04:27 PM - Edit history (1)

All he has to do is nothing and the clock runs out on this Congress.

He vetoed the defense bill already, so Congress has time to override that.

Thoughts?

"If you don't veto in two weeks, it becomes law anyways" applies.

He'll have to actively veto it to keep it from going into effect.

Anything not passed by then has to start over with the new Congress.

And not bank working days, but days that Congress is in session, IIRC. And they're having pro forma sessions to keep things rolling.

That's the answer then. Without an active veto, it should become law on the 1st.

The old Congress will have to get a quorum and 2/3rds it before Jan 3rd, or then he gets another 9 days. Given the 3rd is a Sunday, you are going to have a lot of pissed off Congress critters.

The clock for a pocket veto doesn't start when both houses have passed the same bill. It starts when the bill is "enrolled" by the clerk, signed by the leadership in both houses, nd formally delivered to the White House. As of today, I don't believe that process has been completed. It certainly wasn't completed the 21st -- on the 22nd the House passed a resolution directing the clerk to make a change (to the bill's title) when the bill is enrolled.

If you find a link to th bill online, chances are you will see that the versions available don't even have the pages numbered sequentially, reflecting the fact that the bill was stitched together from several stndalone bills.

He's out to kill poor working class people soley for revenge because they didn't vote for him. He's torturing them for his own personal enjoyment.

If he vetoes it they have the votes to override it and will do so before the end of this congress (Jan 3rd).

Seems to me SCOTUS upheld the literal interpretation of "except Sundays" but I didn't read through it all carefully.

If he doesn't I imagine it will influence what happens in the Georgia run-offs, positively for us Democrats but it will extend the hurt people are feeling.
