We were given dire warnings, high winds and electricity knocked out, and I went to bed expecting to be wakened by storm winds and rain and power outages galore. My flashlight with extra batteries were on my nightstand. I was dreading being cold, in the dark and miserable.
Nothing happened. A little rain. Cloudy.
I'm glad for everyone who celebrates Christmas. I'm usually at my daughter's house but the Covid Grinch stole it.
Still I am glad and happy. I know that it wasn't that great for others in certain parts of CT and NY.
Merry (mercifully reprieved" Christmas!

(68,291 posts)carry in all the grocery bags. I do "fill in" shopping during the week but my arthritic back can't take too much! We've been "prepared for the worst" for so long we're exhausted just thinking about it. One thing that really helps is my twice a week physical therapy and my daily exercises in between!

(60,536 posts)we've had rain all night and right now...plus wind gusts of about 40 mph. The temp is 60' but supposed to drop to 25' late this afternoon. That's about it for our terrible high wind and "at least two inches of rain"
Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!

(4,188 posts)We kept power but lost cable. Lots of decent sized branches littering our property. The winds were howling so much that they kept me awake until about 3:00 a.m.

(34,945 posts)Enough to very briefly knock the power out here a few times. The subsequent surges are probably what blew out the blower on my furnace. Which means I have to wait three fucking days of freezing my ass off to get it fixed without having to pay holiday/weekend rates. Of course, we're getting sub-freezing temperatures for the entirety, making it the coldest weekend in a couple of years here. Merry Fucking Christmas.
I hope I still have some firewood...

(14,168 posts)I remember Christmas morning 40 years ago, temp was minus 5, today 55.

(52,206 posts)Too cold for the minerals to melt the snow. Went to the grocery store yesterday barely made it. So many cars in the ditch. And made a mistake of trying to get the car close to the mail box and drove straight into an icy bank. Thankfully an Amazon driver drove by and with his small shovel managed to clear the stuck tire and with my spouse pushed my small KIA Soul out.

(170,589 posts)The last of it moved out where I am at about 9:30 am EST and then the temp started dropping - from the low 60s earlier and now down to about 38.
A lot of wind yesterday and overnight with many places reporting 60+ mph gusts, but also significant in the area including the city, is the flooding. There were flash flood warning, flood warnings, and flood advisories up yesterday afternoon that continue this morning, with a number of creeks and one of the rivers, coming out of their banks. There were water rescues yesterday evening and many trees blown down including one near where I live.

(170,589 posts)and using a (realistic) 5:1 snow water content ratio (vs the oft-used 10:1 that is hard to achieve around here this early in the season), that could have translated into almost foot of snow!

(170,589 posts)I got 5.51" (which included averaging 4 spots and 5.25" off my snow board) and then I did a water content of what got collected in my Stratus gauge, along with a 2nd measurement from a core sample off my board (first time I had ever gone through that process) and it came out to 4.8 : 1. Disclaimer was that towards the end of that event, I had sleet piled on top of the snow for about an hour and it ended up with ZR at the end, although the temps were not marginal, so there wasn't an expected concrete crust over powder when I went to measure.
It was a PITA to do the water content though since I opted to add a measured amount of hot water to melt it faster and then go through the calcs. Trying to handle that 4" tube is a bear - but that is hobby dedication for ya!
Thankfully ALL of that stuff is gone now after this latest storm with the temps in the 60s and all that rain (although I had a low of 22 this morning
)!

(4,990 posts)We are down in Eastern North Carolina.
We were in the middle of a nasty storm yesterday into early this morning.
For the first time in my life, that I am aware of, I was living right in a Tornado warning bulls eye.
We did not get a tornado but the waves and the wind were quite dramatic.
We are in the Emerald Isle area in North Carolina until end of March.
Today the sound side (facing towards land and Morehead City), is very choppy with white caps and the ocean side waves are still really intense. But the sun is out and temp has dropped down to the 40s with a wind chill making it feel like 36 F. Brrr.
Turkey in the oven, peace abounds. Thankful for everything.
Merry Christmas to all!

(33,435 posts)I lived in a long term rental at Emerald Isle. We had snow during that time! I've lived in the Triangle area of NC for 20 years now, and never expected snow at the beach. And I hadn't brought my snow boots. I really got cold feet while walking the dog in only rain boots!
Jan 4 2018

Im cold just looking at that picture!
Well, you certainly were a brave soul!
Maybe we will get lucky and not have too much. I brought layers and some simple Columbia hiking boots so I am hoping that is enuf. Plenty of warm snuggly socks for lounging in the house as well as a ski cap and one pair of thinsulate style gloves. Yesterday after the storm passed thru, and again today, we bundled up and walked over to the ocean side and walked along the beach. Cold but gloriously sunny.
Since we are used to really long cold snowy winters, this has been a piece of cake so far. And the experience over just the last 3 weeks has been magical.
Weather permitting, we will be taking day trips to various cities and other locales in NC over the next 3 months. I am falling in love with the area but it is a bit pricey for actually purchasing Im afraid. And I think I would have trouble with the hot humid summers.
It may be that we settle on being wintering North Carolinians for a time. Summers in the North Country of New York are really lovely.
anyway, I must enjoy the moment and not think so much about the future. The sunset over the sound tonight was the color of a Tequila sunrise.
Hugs and stay warm! And Happy Holidays to you!!

(65,934 posts)Fortunately the high winds were brief where I was. No power outage. There was flooding nearby but I also got spared there. Awful Grinch of a storm, though. Tornadoes at the end of November and then a high wind event for Christmas.
