The explosion happened near the top at Church St. and 2nd Ave. See how close that is to the State Capitol Bldg. My guess is it went off before it got to it's target.

you can right click map to see larger image.
Edit: While the target could have been the building it was next too, a quite Christmas morning would be a perfect time to bring in a car bomb and park it a few blocks from the eventual target.

(37,432 posts)who knows why people do these things. I hope we find out.
Anyway, why did McVeigh target the Oklahoma? It was a target of opportunity for him.
So why Nashville isn't hard to answer.

(58,785 posts)or at least create major disruption, preferably with blood. When bombs go off outside arenas and such, missing the opportunity to kill many, it's virtually always because the terrorist(s) screwed up.
(LW bombers are famous with terrorism experts for generally preferring to blow up empty facilities, also for warning ahead of time to make sure no one gets killed. But LW bombers are also comparatively much rarer, especially in this era.)
So just blowing up a vehicle on a dark, mostly empty street also made me immediately wonder if it exploded prematurely, before people were around, or as you speculate, before it was moved to a bigger target.

McVeigh was familiar with Oklahoma thanks to his time at Ft. Riley.

Right next to the ATT building makes one conjecture an attempted effort take out communications.
