Dollar General had the highest increase in holiday traffic 🙁

https://www.forbes.com/sites/joanverdon/2020/12/24/these-super-saturday-numbers-show-how-bad-2020-was-for-stores-and-hold-big-clues-for-what-2021-will-be-like/?sh=75e7346846d0
And don’t get me wrong I like dollar general I have bought clothes there but if that’s where the big crowds shopping were @ this holiday sorta indicates a downer economy imo
For many it will be more than just the economy . It will be good jobs lost
I thought Macy’s was a shocker but then I’m from Chicago and people physically shop there during the holidays so covid empty pockets less traffic in the city with folks working from home adds up

Just dropped by du and don’t want to post and be all humbug just the article is longer and had a lot of interesting numbers but still be merry today & good will.
Merry Christmas and 2021 will still be a good year
The vaccine brings hope plus the grinch -I mean trump will be gone soon
:
In a year when powerhouse retailers like Walmart, Target, and T.J Maxx are seeing double-digit traffic declines due to Covid concerns and restrictions, any increase at all is amazing.

Here are some of the reasons that could explain why Dollar General had a traffic surprise, and what it indicates for 2021:

More shoppers are struggling financially heading into 2021

The retail sales apocalypse that was predicted at the beginning of the pandemic lockdowns, and that never materialized due to the dramatic increase in online sales, may be beginning.

Personal income fell in November for the second month in a row, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday. Consumer spending also declined during the month for the first time since April. If this continues, stores that do well in a recession, like Dollar General, will be winners

It’s like a drugstore without the makeup and medical stuff. You can find a lot of different items for pretty cheap.

I can find alcohol when I need it and disinfectant wipes. I have not been able to find those items at other grocery stores.

WalMart was popular because of their hours, but they cut back their hours and now dollar stores and WalMart now have the same hours.

Consumer spending will pick up again. Big gifts aren't going to be popular this year.

IDK did people complain this much about the McCrorys, Woolworths, Kresges and Grants back in the day (which are pretty the same as DG is nowadays)??

Name brand items are about the same price as one would find at Walmart and their store brands are good enough.

I do the bulk of my shopping at Dollar General and usually on a Saturday when they have the $5 off for every $25 spent. I'm in town often during the week where the store is so I'll run in the store and buy a single, needed item that costs about a dollar to get the coupon which is good for the upcoming Saturday. Today I'll be getting tuna, rice, toilet paper, paper towels.

$10.00 Bounty Select-A-size paper towels
$8.95 DG Ultra Strong toilet paper
$3.00 80 oz. bag white rice
$3.75 5 cans DG tuna
--------
$25.70
-$5.00 coupon
------
$20.70 total cost

There are times when I've had 4 coupons and did a big shopping trip. Looking at the DG website for prices, I'll make up 4 shopping lists that each total just above $25.00. So instead of costing me about $100, with the coupons I spend just over $75 plus any tax.

Edit: Some time ago, I decided I wanted the pantry and storage shelves filled with items we use on a regular basis so if I was cooking or doing something, I'd have what I needed on hand. I also wanted a stock so in case of emergency, we'd be fine for 30 days or more (this was long before anyone heard of COVID19). Being on SSDI, I didn't have much to spend at a time to build my stock and it took months and I did it buy shopping mostly at DG and using the $5 coupons to get more bang for the buck.

When the TP shortage hit the nation earlier this year, we were fine and had more then enough on hand. When supplies returned to close to a normal level, I built the stock back up.
