In June of 1974 a New York Times reporter went to an almost entirely white, upper-middle class retirement community in Orange County, Ca to see what folks thought of the ongoing Nixon impeachment. What they heard might ring some bells.

(8,179 posts)That's where Nixon's west coast home existed. My in-laws had a ranch style home in the hills overlooking town and ocean, they loved Nixon and thought all of these things. That it was witch hunt, and they considered John Dean a double crossing snitch. I was pleased as punch that his was being impeached, however I didn't engage with them over the affair. It was the prevailing sentiment with the locals.

(6,068 posts)his time working for Nixon in the 70's convinced him he could create a GOP-biased news media to help the GOP and prevent another Nixon from being "forced" from office.
So the consequences of Watergate are with us to this day, and not in a good way, with Fox News and their ilk.

(13,913 posts)What worries me is the continuing descent into mendacity by the deplorables, and that the integrity of future elections have been irreparably harmed by the disinformation & shenanigans the Con/GOP have unleashed this past election.
Orange County is no longer as red as it used to be and went for Biden, and the russian asset Rohrabacher got defeated by a Dem in 2018.

(17,591 posts)I was driving from PA to Oklahoma City for Thanksgiving in 1974, a few months after Nixon resigned. I was driving on I-40 and came upon a YUGE billboard:
GOD BLESS RICHARD NIXON AND AMERICA!!! (of course, covered with American flags......)
Damned near wrecked!
