Breaking: Colorado reports first U.S. case of COVID-19 variant

On Tuesday, Gov. Jared Polis confirmed Colorado's first case of the COVID-19 variant B.1.1.7, the same variant discovered in the U.K. According to ABC News, this is believed to be the first known case of the variant in the U.S.

State public health officials report the patient is a man in his 20s, who is currently in isolation in Elbert County and has not traveled recently.

Edited to add: Elbert County is rural with a small population. If it's there, it's everywhere.

It would not surprise me in the least. While I see lots of masks when I do go out (rarely) I commonly see house parties in the neighborhood with no masks and lots of people. Same think happened at Halloween time. We are in a world of hurt unfortunately.

I just updated my post that it's not only Colorado, it's a rural county with a small population. This man also had no travel history. If it's there, it's everywhere.

It's been here for months.

It's clearly already spreading at a community level in Elbert County, Colorado which isn't exactly a metropolitan area. If it's there we should assume, as I have been, that it's already in most communities throughout the country. When it comes to respiratory viruses you should just assume that if you hear about it in some part of the world....it's already in your part of the world too. Travel restrictions, temperature checks, testing, whatever do not work to stop a virus from entering. It will get through. All we can do is use measures to reduce the ability for it to transmit and try to keep the spread as low as possible until it's over.

The vaccines are going to work, but we are in the thickest part of the fight right now.

B.1.1.7 was discovered in September....it's December. That's MONTHS. Also, it's crazy to think it was found immediately, much more likely it was circulating there for weeks before it was found. It takes magical thinking to believe that it didn't make it here around that same time and simply wasn't found until now rather than to believe that it suddenly appeared in rural Colorado.
