Happy 43rd anniversary, Monty Python!

Are you a lumberjack? Because you're OK. Is this the right room for an argument? Because that parrot is definitely deceased. Nudge nudge, know what I mean, know what I mean?

Yes, "Monty Python's Flying Circus" turns 43 years old today. The show premiered Oct. 5, 1969, on Britain's BBC One. Americans, though, quickly jumped on the Brit-wit bandwagon, making the show and the Pythons' movies quotable cult classics.

Their skits were viral videos before there most of us had ever heard of the Internet. Depending on your school, you had a fairly good chance of walking into the band room or another place where Python-esque people hang out, throwing out "What is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?" and having someone shout back, "What do you mean? An African or European swallow?" You have to know these things when you're a king, you know.

So if you're a fan, serve yourself some Spam, do a silly walk or two, and share this post with a friend. Because no one expects the Spanish Inquisition.

1. I am the proud owner of a burlap sack

that held coconuts that were distributed around Manhattan by Pythons as a promo for The Holy Grail.

(I was too late for an actual coconut.)

9. You should have waited for more coconuts to migrate.

13. Once upon a time...

I saw the whole troop minus Graham Chapman.

It was their 20th anniversary at the Museum of Radio and TV in NYC.

They had a cardboard cut out of Chapman in his seat. They said he wasn't feeling well and sends his regards. (It wasn't released yet that he was dying of AIDS)

It was such a remarkable thing to witness them all in one place.

14. My Python close encounters...

I got to see them perform not once but twice at the Hollywood Bowl. One of the nights we had front row seats, and when they did the Bruces Philosophers Song, Michael Palin threw cans of Fosters Lager into the audience, and I managed to catch one! Still have the stupid thing to this day. Those 'concerts' were so fun.

Many years later, John Cleese was visiting my workplace while he was promo-ing his Fierce Creatures film. When I heard he was there I went over really just to catch a glimpse of him, but ended up getting a hug!! I told him about being at the Bowl and he laughed and said "We were all much younger then". A friend snapped a photo of the hug and I have it but can't find it! One of those "I'll put it in a safe place" things....argh!

Still a die-hard fan. Look at these old geezers.....
