7. The guy up the hill from us used to have a ginormous Trump banner hanging from the 2nd floor...

He replaced it with TRUMP in Xmas lights on the hill behind him. He has a thoroughly defaced US flag in the front of his house — hard to tell what-all is on it because of the drape, but I think it’s Trump’s face and a MAGA slogan.

I stood there staring for awhile, just me and DH and the dog, and finally gave voice to what troubled me: 20 years ago I was working with a group of combat veterans against BushCheney’s war, and they took the American flag seriously as a symbol of what they had fought for, the promises made to them and the promises broken, and what this country was supposed to stand for. I think they would be seriously offended by the way the flag is being defaced today — by Trumpistas, but also by people who want to make an in-your-face statement about how they support police by defacing the flag in their own cause.

21. From rural northeast Pennsylvania

This area is primarily farms and some light manufacturing. During the run-up to the election, there were many Trump signs and in some places, quite a few Biden signs. The Trump ones outnumbered the Biden ones by 3 to 1, it appeared. One local farmer had 15 or 20 different Trump banners on his lawn, house and cars! Remarkably, he took them all down a day or two after the election.

Not so with many others who have left them up. One household I pass on the way to the post office-- it's so rural we don't get mail delivery!-- has put up NEW signs! One reads, "Still Deplorable! Still Voting for Trump!" Another reads, "Women For Trump - Fuck Your Feelings."

What a mess PE Biden is inheriting.

NE Pennsylvania does have some progressives in spite of the GOPers.

Here's an interesting anecdote. My wife took a part time teacher's assistant job at a local high school when we retreated up here. One of her jobs was to enforce the social distancing/mask wearing rules. While the kids obeyed the rules for the most part, many of them groused that Covid was a hoax and that the issue was one of personal liberties.

Now, where in the world would kids get such a perspective? From home, of course. When the school held their mock presidential election, the kids voted 3 to 1 in favor of Trump. Do teenagers really have politically independent views or were they reflecting ideas they learned at home?

As the Fall semester was coming to a close, we decided that she should quit the job because the risks were too high. We're older and fall into a couple of high risk groups. Sure enough, 2 weeks after she left the school, 2 cases were reported and they had to close till after the new year.

NE Pennsylvania is in the Lower Catskills and it's just beautiful. Most of the people we now and encounter are fine folks. There was a BLM rally earlier this past summer in one of the villages nearby. The cop I spoke with said they expected 75-100 people. There were over 500 who showed up!

Thankfully, the majority of Pennsylvanians voted for Joe Biden. There's hope for this state!

No matter the candidate. In my brothers hometown they are banned by city code. I was there in Fall of 16 and the yards were all decorated for Fall and Halloween instead of political yard signs, it was very nice.

Now the stupid Trump signs and flags are still up and uglier than ever. Folks flying Trump 2020 flags are going to look more foolish in less than a week

a few houses still had Biden and Trump signs out, but now there's only 1 house along my daily travel route that still has a Trump sign out, everyone else has taken their signs down. I have seen some signs promoting love over hate popping up lately though.

Last week on the way to the vet's I passed a house that not only had Trump flags on their mailbox post, but a lit TRUMP display in their front yard - great big white letters with lights like a Christmas display. The thing is I'd driven by three weeks before, a month after the election and after Biden's win had been certified, and the resident of that house did not have anything like that in his yard. He must have made it just for the Christmas season.

All I could think of as I drove by was "LOSER!"

That is not the only house I passed that still had their Trump signs up but it was the most tasteless, blatantly stupid one.
