They bake cookies, leave 'em on your front porch in pretty boxes, and include clever notes too.

(2,425 posts)But remember in this culture, many of us were not exposed to anything about being gay that was honest. We were taught lies about homosexuality and to fear it. I know I have a lot of information to catch up on. Mostly the subject of homosexuality was just a black box that we knew nothing about and what was revealed to us was shameful. My generation is trying to catch up to the facts and trying to shed the biases we were taught. Please help us and try to remember we are trying to learn better, even as we reveal the biases we were taught and the ignorance that lingers and that we continue to try to overcome.

You're in Seattle, It's time to be hippie-fabulous!!!
Drive by decorating? Easy. Its where a centralized network of fab operatives sneak you a gift certificate to a fancy eatery to lure you away. When your gone, we break into your house, rework your living room and kitchen for something much more awesome

could I just stay home and watch the decorating show live and in person?
Actually, that sounds like one hell of a great reality series idea.
Of course, people would probably get pissed when they got home, or maybe not, but hey, that could be part of the appeal!
Some people might even think they're haunted!

We just bought a house but havent moved in yet. Weve been running back and forth doing little projects.
I think we are being sized up by the three neighbor moms. Im sure theyve figured it out by now. I feel like a piece of meat.
But thats ok, they look like they might be fun. AND they had Black Lives Matter signs on their front lawns. Which is a very good sign. It helped sell the house. I think one of the other houses had a teacher union sign too!
Ill seal the deal with the giant snowblower I just bought if we get snow. Great way to make friends.

Next door is the lost cat and dog message board. Which is great. Our neighborhood is on the WA side of the Columbia River and it thinks houses on the south side in OR are in the same neighborhood is an another example of next doors shortcomings. Its not properly fenced around a physical neighborhood.
I just want an app that tells me how many Evangelicals are in my cal-du-sac. I bought new and half of them are not cool and right wing bigots. Having good neighbors is wonderful having ones you do not like and are judged by is not fun at all.

(23,369 posts)Mostly a long time ago, I dealt with a good amount of harassment about sexual orientation.
What I really hope for is people coming to a place where a range of sexual orientation and identity/"being" generally, is not just acceptable, it is understood to be part of being human.
Tink41
(537 posts)Years ago. Grew up several houses away as kids. Never knew, those days I think we assumed the gays popped out of the sky as fully grown adults. Surely your best pal wasn't gay.....
We decided to be upfront with our child about why we had split. My feelings and hope were that if we discussed this openly, someday no one else would experience the heartbreak we did as a family. Maybe our child could be the friend a person could trust to come out to. There was no animosity between us, I understood it to be a situation purely influenced by society. I couldn't quite find
my reasons then, but I knew things had to change.
I've been a full champion for equality and acceptance, so much so people speculate about me. Who cares. 3 hearts shattered in a million pieces from ignorance.

When my daughter was a teen, we watched Milk, the Harvey Milk movie.

(23,369 posts)I like that it may be less challenging for young gay people now than in the past, even recent past. That said I think Ive learned from my experiences with anti-gay sentiment and actions and it has helped me to be aware of and motivated me to oppose oppression of others.

(46,893 posts)I worked in health care and have friends and family members who work in that field as well. The LGBT community is greatly underserved.
Teens are still at risk from even their own family.
Because the concept of sexual identity and preference is now fluid and complex, there are still societal acceptance issues.

What I want to know is what would separate and distinguish "gay" people from the artists, individualists, liberally minded, etc. How do you know if someone is gay, do they wear a sign? Do artists and liberals have a certain appearance compared to gay people? I don't know which of the people I see are gay or not unless they are actually making out right in front of me. How and why are they identified as gay? Does it make a difference in being a good neighbor?
Botany

One of them was a retired military officer who came out after retirement. An elderly lady moved into our house because her son purchased it. A deranged man broke in and proceeded to stab her to death. She bled out on the gay neighbors couch. Anyway the other neighbor heard the screaming and broke in to try to save her. He was stabbed in the liver. Stumbled over to the gay couples house. Because one of them was retired military he knew how to save his life. Both were honored by the city as heros.
