What a year its been... with all the angst and tears. Although Ive been fortunate not to of lost anyone from my immediate family or friends. Reading the post of those that have, has been heartbreaking.
I lost my beloved cat of 19 years during this mess and I must say it was a horrible time to lose him.
If for no other reason but to hold him tight sometimes it got me to the next day!
Maybe this has no big significance to some but this is a Big deal to me.
I suffer anxiety and my cat always seemed to help.
Wishing everyone a better New Year!!!
Cant wait to share pictures of her after tomorrow. Remember to help someone in need. So many need a phone call or just a quick text or email.
So lets hear it for the cat crowd here in D.U. And all of us who survived 2020!

lol note: I'm lying in bed surfing with my bad eyes and at first thought your title said you were eating a kitten instead of getting one...boy, glad for my bad eyes for once....

(8,514 posts)I'm happy for you, and also sorry you had to say goodbye to your old guy.
I am not really a cat person. I have four. Didn't want any. But I have to admit they've been good company these past nine months, in spite of the fact that only one is tame enough to snuggle.
Seriously, I guess I kind of like them.

We really need a cat emoji here on D.U.

(8,514 posts)I walked in to my living room and saw my diluted tortie, CallieLou, looking out the window. Then I saw cat puke on the floor.
So, fun times.
Fortunately it wasn't hard to clean up because it was on the hardwood floor. I'm kind worried about the fact that someone isn't feeling well, though.
I'll be looking to see the pic of your new kitten tomorrow.

(15,107 posts)We got a new kitten in June, even though we already had plenty of kitties. Thats another story. But she has really brightened up our lives. Shes just so funny!
Best wishes for you and your new little friend. I just know she will make you smile.

I lost my beloved dog a few years back and it was sheer hell, but I just got a shelter pup a few months ago and boy oh boy what a difference a pet makes!

(15,359 posts)my buddy Fatty at Christmas time a several years ago and really should have gotten another cat soon after but didn't. Then my girlfriend rescued a kitten and gave her to me at about six months old. That was about eight years ago. It was so fun having a frisky little girl around that I was part kicking myself for not doing it sooner, but also glad I waited for her.

(17,497 posts)That is a lucky kitten! Just remember, they might be tiny, but their teeth and claws are pretty darn sharp!
It will be a big change from a more sendentary senior, to a rambunctious baby, too.

(17,497 posts)one of cats had to put down at just 3. My family always had cats, but this was my first kitten. I was covered in kitten claw marks until she got big enough to jump up without using me for a ladder. But she's a great cat and her foster mom did a wonderful job getting her ready to be handled.

(4,584 posts)He was 12 yrs of age. Being a widow of 3 months it was very hard. But in February my son took me to our local Humane Society. There I asked if they had any cats that were older for an older lady. They laughed and sure enough they had several. Long story short, I now half my new housemate, Maxy which is short for Maxine. We get along great. Oh, I'll always miss my Oliver, but Maxy is great company.

(8,514 posts)Even more difficult because of how close together both instances happened.
I lost a husband a few decades ago, and then five months later his cat died. I loved the cat too, but I think the cat loved my husband more, and I kinda think he really died from a broken heart. He was a great cat, and my husband was pretty great too.

Good luck.

(20,662 posts)that, despite the emotional gut-punch her loss was, I would eventually want another kitty back in my life. They bring so much comfort and joy, as far as I'm concerned! Around 6 months later, I found a senior Persian girl through one of the local rescue groups, and she's been a part of my life for nearly 2 years. I've been incredibly blessed - both of them were and are arguably amongst the nicest kitties you could ever meet!

(415 posts)Lucky was nineteen and Mickey was thirteen. Always tough, but we know what we are signing on for when we get a pet and it is more than worth it. I still have my little sweet calico Olive who talks all the time. She is not lonely though as my three pups see to that. Good luck.

(58,785 posts)and, yes, please, lots of pix.
One icy February, as a surprise for my husband, I picked up a kitten at a flea market who was really too small to leave his mother (already a done thing, no mom there). Oliver spent his first two days with us playing on my husband, who spent them sick in his recliner. Oliver was too little to dare jump off, and that little world was a perfect safe place for initially snuggling and curious exploration, and then hours of kitten mayhem and sleeping off same.

(4,197 posts)about 27 years ago, the owners were moving several states away. They took their dogs, but told us they would be taking their two young (about a year old) cats to the Humane Society. They had only gotten them as mousers, and didn't want to try to move them. I was so proud of my husband who immediately told them "No, no, no. Just leave them with us. It's their house, after all." Jack was with us for about eight more years. Arnie lived another fifteen years or so and died an old lady.
We've had cats ever since. Right now we have three. Leo and Cassie are litter mates and Quantum is a fun (if often weird) young lady.
Have fun with your new kitty, and send lots of pics!

(9,019 posts)A few years ago I lost the second of two kitty sisters. I was so lost and distraught that whenever I went to the grocery store I would spend time in my the pet supplies aisle staring at cat food. A few months later I adopted 2 rescued feline sisters who have brought me great comfort and joy during this long period of isolation. They are my reason to get out of bed in the morning.

(12,215 posts)I'm very happy for you. I think when our Cairn is gone (he'll be 13 in the early Spring), it will be a cat that fills out our household. I hope you have many years of love and enjoyment with your new friend!

(166 posts)In the begining of the pandemic, we lost our two beloved cats. Our lil girl feline was 13 and had complications of a hernia and our may was 16 and had kidney failure. We let them go over the Rainbow Bridge with the help of our vet. It was a calm and peaceful end. After a few months into this virus, we needed some feline friends again. We found two on Petfinder and adopted them. Best move we have ever made. They have given us endless laughter and joy! Our tiger striped boy is the smartest cat I have ever seen ! Little girl cat the most loving. One thing we have found out is that due to Covid, we do not have many people over here at the house. So the kitts have what we call Covid Syndrome. They are scared to death of other people !I'm not sure if they will ever be socialized or not. We are seniors here, we have no children, few living relatives, and most friends are gone for the winter months. Somehow we are going to have to socialize these kittens, so i'm bringing them to the front door when the delivery people make our deliveries. It is not helping much but we will see how the Spring and Summer go, God willing we do not get this evil disease. samplegirl, enjoy your little bundle of fluff ! teach her some tricks ! Buy her some interactive toys from Chewy. You will have a special bond with this lil one! Congratulations!
samplegirl
(13,982 posts)heartfelt words! Like you no visitors here. If I could have my grandkids she would get socialized real quick.
My last cat loved everyone... but growing up I had people in and out the house nonstop!
Hope this New Year gives us some peace after January.
Stay safe and hug those kitties!
