Looking back at the mask divide and the anti-maskers:

I remember trump saying something like "I will not be wearing a mask. It would look silly to
greet heads of state with that on." Not verbatim of course. But the real reason, I believe, that
he refused to wear a mask was because it would smear his make-up, his sprayed on tan.
So because of the ridiculous vanity of this fake and ugly creature, millions of his followers
decided he was right. "If he ain't wearin' one, I ain't wearing one neither."
Of course freedumb too, but to me trump's vanity has cost many, many thousands of lives.

And I think he recognized the mask issue as a way to drive another wedge between us.

He worries that his brain dead supporters might not think he's tough enough if he wears a mask all the time.

probably applies to a lot of them. They think they're beautiful and can't bear the thought of covering up all that beauty.

A big problem for a pResident doing it is that people in other countries see him on their TV not wearing a mask and many probably figure well, he's the "leader of the free world" so he has all the facts and he says it's okay. And thus his deadly behavior spreads globally. Fellow autocrats like Bolsonazi can also point to the pResident to justify their own deadly behavior which may also be based in vanity.
