I knew it was just a matter of time before this happened. My psycho sister thinks Covid is a hoax and at least twice a week would visit my mother. I told my mom a hundred times to not let her in the house if she wasn't going to wear a mask and my sister would threaten to never see her again if she made her wear a mask. Of course my mom gave in because she is tired of being alone constantly. 3 days ago she started feeling sick with a fever, sore throat, headache, etc and went and got a test. Just got the results and sure enough has Covid. This kind of behavior should be illegal, who the hell keeps going around and 80 year old with no mask in the middle of a pandemic??

(113,908 posts)does not ALWAYS mean they will be responsible). But in my case they generally ARE. Still, I have a close friend with substantial personal health risks and whose husband is undergoing chemo for late-stage cancer with a fairly poor prognosis. She is having to deal with his family, who senses that his time is limited and want to have personal visits. Honestly, it is a horrible situation, but how can they demand a visit that will likely put his remaining days at risk? But, I can understand their desire to do so. BUt, at least they will likely adhere to wearing masks.
I hope for the best for your mother.

(58,785 posts)Best wishes that she does.
I imagine we're going to see a lot of personal injury suits against people who refused to take appropriate care. Refusal to believe won't protect them.
And some people who flout regulations may be prosecuted for "depraved indifference to life," in special cases possibly even murder. That almost no one would try to kill grandma in order to inherit sooner doesn't mean no one would.

(64,356 posts)about the person you love most in the world getting COVID-19. And I suppose she feels no guilt for potentially bringing disease and possibly worse to your elderly mother.
I'm saying a pray for her recovery.
I have an aunt who is elderly, knows better than to go out, but she can't seem to stop herself. Isolating when necessary is too hard emotionally qfor her. She is a "social butterfly" and seems to thrive on being with others and doing things. Her husband says she probably has it now as she's been unwell the last few days. Her inability to adapt, to find the discipline, may be the cause of her destruction and her husband's. But she knows she's wrong. She knows COVID-19 is real.

(14,262 posts)Your sister not only bullied your Mom, but then caused her to contract covid-19 because of your sister's irresponsibility due to willful ignorance. There has been plenty of evidence during the last year to counter the "hoax" narrative, but your sister made the decision to believe otherwise.
Your sister should be tested and if she is found to have the virus, but asymptomatically she should be pushed to take full responsibility for your Mom's condition or get out of Dodge. She should pay for caregivers and anything your Mom needs. Hopefully your Mom will be well enough to stay home and not be hospitalized, or worse.
I am so sorry.
There is no excuse for willful ignorance or reckless endangerment of a vulnerable person.

(317 posts)I rarely talk to her but decided to see what she had to say and of course it was "she didn't get it from me, I'm not sick" to "people arent dying, thats media BS". She wasn't concerned at all, she's nuts. I've been thinking this past year that it's almost like she was trying to get her exposed, my mom inherited a couple of million 2 years ago and my sister has tried to take advantage every way she could. The day before the restaurants were due to close indoor dining she talked my mom into taking her out to eat so she could get a free meal. I seriously think she is sitting around counting the days.

But I would never, never be able to forgive my sister. Maybe you're a better person than I am, but that relationship would be over if it were me.
My other hope is that after your mother recovers--I so hope she recovers--you will be able to spend time with her and she won't be alone anymore.

(25,967 posts)your sister's behavior was a deliberate attempt tovharm your mother. Sounds like grounds to report her for elder abuse at the very least because that is concretely provable by her actions.
On a personal level, it is grounds for you to permanently "disown" her as a sister. I would.

(9,352 posts)"The sister is actively trying to kill off Mom - there must be money somewhere" was the first thing I thought.
There probably is not enough tangible evidence to charge her with attempted muder (I am praying it stays only an attempt), there must be something she can be charged with. If you don't have one, find a good, tough lawyer.

(639 posts)when your sister comes over to your mother's house.
1) Turn your phone camera onto video and start recording.
2) Warn her, that she is an imminent threat to your life and to go away.
If she doesn't and continues to approach you, then fire a warning shot.
3) If she does continue, then you could use the stand your ground laws, if applicable in your state.
3a) I don't suggesst trerminating her, but you can surely cripple her by taking out her knees, elbows
and/or hands. The bullying of your parents, by your sister is, in almost all states a crime.
Notes: I read of a similar case in Texas, where the family did defend a parent, using that law. They were not charged with felonies.
They did get a civil fine for discharging a weapon within city limits, or someething like that. I don't remember when this occured or where in Texas. I also do not know if the family had a restraining order on the person, but there was a long history with police over this person and the family parents.

(114,602 posts)Having said that I think you need to go with the statistics, that even people over 80, who have the highest death rate, only have a 15% chance of dying from this. I know statistics are cold comfort, but let them give you hope.
Remember, this disease is killing people who don't catch it by isolating them, preventing screenings for possible problems from diabetes to cancer, and generally robbing them of contact with the world. Your mom took a calculated risk. The tragedy is that it's happening now--in two moths or so she would have had that first shot and had it start to work and that means a much milder case.
Your mom could have had contact with a delivery person or neighbor, so unless your sister is ill with this or a documented asymptomatic carrier, there is no way to be 100% certain she was the source. Still, she is undeniably stupid and a big, fat baby who thinks this is all about her.

They should start having the anti-maskers help out with turning and caring for Covid patients that are ventilators so that maybe they can grasp the reality of the situation.

There quite likely could be skulduggery afoot, especially if there is money at stake, and especially as this POS sister is a MAGAt and therefore in a cult based off deception and criminal intent and deed. (69 posts)It's known as attempted manslaughter. If your sister is the only one who visited your mom, your sister is the spreader. You can call the police and register a complaint about it. If your mom dies, the charge will change to negligent manslaughter.
It's a difficult decision to make but it'll keep your "psycho sister" from infecting others.
