General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHave you ever known a former union member living on a good union pension that is anti-union?
Such people do exist. I know several. There is nothing that says "first world problems" more than someone who has a good life and retirement going, yet complains about unions, especially when it was a union that helped them get what they currently have.
I'm to the point where I don't even try to reason with such people. I avoided a lot of discussions this Holiday Season.

(14,057 posts)And we're not talking about people in the Engineering and Scientific and Technical Unit. Though when I was in that union there were members that were Republicans.
Collimator
(2,119 posts)"I got mine. Screw everybody else." is more common than we would like to believe. And more of those people tend to gravitate to the Republican party.

(6,797 posts)said unions are not good. They take care of people who don't want to work and the company works the he'll out of everyone else. I told her without the union she wouldn't make the good wages she does and have no benefits. The company would work you even harder if you didn't have a union. And a union helped you have the good life you had growing up. I think every business should have a union.

(6,356 posts)He's also a holier-than-everyone-else "devout Christian"...who cares more about his taxes than the homeless and hungry. If you argue either point with him, he'll just go into what I call "bobblehead mode" and say, "Yeaaaaaah, I knoooow, but I want the money" and try to change the subject.
What really shocked me is the number of Trumpublican union members out here who still desire a chance to lick Donald's anus. Shouldn't have been surprised, I suppose--it's grunt work, so yeah, a lot of bigots, frustrated wifebeater-wannabes and childish incels out here, plenty of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) cases and nitwits who would never question the most insane bullshit FOXHenhouse dumps on them.

(39,086 posts)the union did and complained about the dues all their lives but were happy to take all the benefits and now draw a good pension because of the union. They were also Republicans. The proof of this is what was called the Blue Wall states that voted for Trump in 2016
those were the states with the union jobs.

(5,181 posts)But he was first in line to grab the benefits. Plus he was an evangelical voting only red. Our union endorsed candidates based only on educational policies. That always meant Dems. He objected because they were pro choice. No one forced him to vote for them, no member dues went to those candidates, but that was why he would not join. Religious objections. Frankly he went to the Church of the Cheap. Yeah, I miss him. Hell walk away soon with a bigger pension than mine simply because salaries are higher now. Grrrr . . .

(15,696 posts)Every time contract negotiations were set to begin, my inbox in the main office was suddenly stuffed with wish lists from anti-Union teachers. It's always the non-dues payers who ask for the moon.
I tore up those lists (always the unsigned ones) and threw them in the trash in front of everyone.

All complaints and no solutions.

(12,669 posts)and I must admit they do exist. Most do not pay dues but still get the benefits of unionization.
