President Trump casts a long shadow over the Republican Party even as his attempts to cling to power look doomed to failure.
Trump could run again in 2024. If he does, it is hard to see anyone beating him for the Republican nomination.
Although Trump lost the presidential election by around 7 million votes, he is by far the most popular figure in the nation with GOP voters. He has enormous fundraising prowess he raised about $170 million in the month after the election and he can drive media attention like no one else.
Still, Trump will be 78 by the time of the next election. He also faces financial pressures, with large debts coming due in the next few years. He will continue to command headlines but there are solid reasons why he may not run for the presidency again.
There is speculative chatter that one of Trumps children, perhaps his elder daughter Ivanka, could enter the political arena. But here are some other front-line contenders for the GOP nomination in 2024.
Nikki Haley, Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, Mike Pence, Tom Cotton

(14,029 posts)He'll try to dump Trumpism while keeping as many Trumpies as possible. He'll make up for lost Trumpies by trying to pull centrists over from the Dems. He's been a mensch on Trumpism, has a centrist position on climate change, is an institutionalist, and may (imo) try to help Biden "fix Obamacare." Remember, Obamacare was partly modeled on Romneycare from Massachusetts.
Romney's problem is the Republican Primary. He'll have to find a way to reject Trump or his replacement wannabes while opening the door for "reasonable Trumpies" to return to the fold.
I think 2024 is all about the center and reality-based politics. We have an advantage there, but we should be focusing on building it.

(21,237 posts)I don't necessarily disagree with them, but they show a lot of cult like behavior themselves so it's just the battle of the cults.

(16,460 posts)He is going to play the sane republican that will save the country from those evil Democrats.
But make no mistake, his policy positions will be exactly the same as trump's. Only the language will be prettied up.

(6,160 posts)But Ryan could have broad appeal as well. It all depends on how much trump's influence fades over four years. If Republicans totally reject trumpism, which seems doubtful in this moment, then some of the more moderate conservatives could be a force to be reckoned with.

(6,160 posts)I can see Kasich running as the guy who's been sane all along. Coming out against trump was the right thing towel, but I'm sure there was a political calculation involved. There always is.

(54,131 posts)the crazies won't vote for anything other than a bona fide Trump. Cruz and the rest of them are undermining their own prospects every time they genuflect to the orange wannabe dictator. They would be smarter to try to rehabilitate what's left of the GOP and pander to them. 2024 could be a giant gift for Democrats when the crazies vote for Trump (who will no doubt start a third party if not the nominee) and the more lucid of the GOP vote for whoever (or whatever) they nominate.
