I've given up on my personal abilities to predict Trump's changing strategies to overthrow the government and 2020 election results...so barring the unlikely event Congress delegitimizes the election and the unlikelihood of the Proud Boys et al. commandeering the certification process, what will Trump do after Pence declares Biden the winner?

(7,604 posts)If he becomes president for a day or a week or whatever, he has no real future as he will be perceived as Trump's doormat. But if he also pardons Trumpy-Boy, his fate will be worse. Gerry Ford was lucky because all that happened to him was an election loss to Jimmy Carter. Pence will fare far worse if he plays into Trumpy-Boy's game. He'll be viewed as having no integrity, no dignity, as a candidate for any office. All through his VP job, he laid himself before the Almighty Trump and allowed himself to be used as the rug that Trump rubs his shoes off. He's played puppy dog on Trump's lap, licking his hands and face at every opportunity.
So if Trump resigns and forces the short term presidency onto Pence, he'll have to pay a price. He may not get the pardon from Pence at all. If Pence has designs for the presidency through an election, he'll have to show some gonads and send Trump begging. He'll have to show some guts. And he'll have no incentive to make a show of it and play along with Trump. There will be no quid pro quo, and if there appears to be, Trump will violate any agreement whenever it's convenient. So there can be no trust. Pence will have to cut the cord if he's to have any future success. Pence will NOT take the heroic approach.

A self-pardon will be shot down quickly by the judiciary. It doesn't matter which Court hears the case. Further, a self-pardon can be used in a criminal trial as an act to obstruct justice, along with many of the pardons that Trump already granted.

(2,957 posts)I think his biggest fear is prosecution but have read so much argument there, I'm not sure how realistic his fear is. But he has so many narcissistic traits, who knows for certain just what it is about losing that bothers him most?
The self pardon thing could, based on what I read, be a double edged sword and possibly create more problems than it solves. Based on (again) what I read, he could go to another country with no extradition agreements and avoid legal issues. But I don't much think he wants to spend the remainder of his life in exile somewhere.
I'll be surprised if the Jan 6 protests don't go beyond peaceful...but a few or even several thousand wackos can't take over the capitol, leastways not permanently. And I don't really think there are enough wackos with the guts to attempt a take-over. I'll also be surprised if Trump actually shows his face Jan 6...very surprised. And if he isn't leading the march, who has the balls to do it?
