The dumbest "president".

To win the election, Trump needed only to take the prevailing scientific advice on Covid. OK, the guy can not do empathy, but he could have hidden behind the experts, as leaders all around the world have done. Along as he stuck with the consensus, no-one could have touched him - playing politics with the pandemic would have been la lethal charge against his opponents.

There are so many IFs here, but the main one is IF he was not Donald Trump.

He may not have been the first ruthless, stupid clown that people laughed at until it was too late, but he is certainly the dumbest.

If in January he had stepped forward and declared an emergency and immediately called in the leadership of the congress, he could have put the democrats back on their heels. They would have had to cooperate and he would have gotten credit for his leadership. If he was following the science, Biden couldn't have criticized because he would have to disagree with Fauci et. al. He wouldn't have to had actually done anything, he could have let the congress and the CDC do most of the heavy lifting.

He would have sailed into office.

Especially if one is a Republican, the voter base of which is shrinking with every election cycle.

That's why most Republicans at least make a head-fake in the direction of broad-based pan-ideological voter support; to shore up numbers for the election. They run as center-right, then do a hard-right turn once they're in office.

Trump only ever played to his demented, reality-challenged hard-core base of supporters, repelling everyone else.

And he lost.

Sums it up perfectly in a nice visual.

All he had to do was listen to the scientists and play consoler in chief. He would’ve won easily.
