Many of the people who misspell it went to school a long, long time ago.

I can spell martial law correctly. So can most people. Only a tiny minority of people can't spell it correctly.

I once saw it written "Marital Law," so there is that, too.

That's not a real issue.

(I never learned to spell phonetically, but rather am usually very accurate from visual memory of how a correctly spelled word "looks" )

So, it really does bother me, though I don't usually point them out.

Martial is an adjective used to describe things related to the military or war. This is the adjective used in "Martial Law." Marshal can be used as a noun referring to a ranked position in the fire or police department and the military, and is also a verb meaning "to lead or direct a group in a careful way." Marshall is an established variant of "Marshal" and also used for proper names and places.

I found the name of the Mann Act of 1910 confusing. Named after Congressman James Mann of Illinois, (wiki) ...it made it a felony to engage in interstate or foreign commerce transport of "any woman or girl for the purpose of prostitution or debauchery, or for any other immoral purpose." It was also called the White Slave Traffic Act. Of course it was.

For years I didn't know it was the name of a federal law. I thought it was "the man act," and that it meant rape. I think my mom did too, because I'd heard about it from her as she warned my sister and me about certain kinds of men who might want to perform the man act on us.

By the way, it was a DUer who informed me about the actual Mann Act.
